java calling cobol under Microfocus Net Express 3.1

Our client is developing a java web front end to our system, running under websphere. When the Sun JVM is installed, everything is fine, but when they install the IBM JVM, and error is reported as 'unsupported JVM'. Has anybody come across this, and is there a solution?
