Evolvability
I looked up Evolvability using Google and turned up some interesting
papers from both the biological and computational sciences. However
all the CS papers were about evolvability of the genetic algorithms,
not the problems they are used to solve. If you say that most genetic
algorithms are substantially similar in what they can and cannot
solve, I am curious as to what factors make a problem highly
evolvable.
I am interested in computational self assembly which you can liken to
genetic programming but I never had much luck with it. Such systems
show very poor evolvability.

Chromosome for subset and subset combinations
I'm trying to implement a GA for a particular problem
and need some help choosing a good chromosome
representation that's amenable for crossover or
mutation.
The problem is concerned with finding optimal combinations
from a subset of items.
Suppose I have five items A, B, C, D, and E. Candidate solutions
are all possible *combinations* of the subsets. A solution
can have individual items, a subset of the items, or
combinations of subsets. For example, here are some valid
candidate solutions:
A
A, B, E
A+B, D+C+A, C
A+B+C+D+E, A, B

NetKeys algorithm. Used to evolve spanning trees.
I have put some source code for the NetKeys (Network Random Keys)
algorithm here:
http://code.google.com/p/lemontree/downloads/list
There is also a paper included in the download explaining the
algorithm.
You can use it to evolve spanning trees of any type, for example
constrained minimum spanning trees.
It is particularly useful for real number based evolutionary
algorithms such as Evolutionary Strategies (ES).

this is to announce a new C++ framework for EC, named simply ECF
(Evolutionary computation framework). It is available at

Although still young, there are some features that may make it
interesting:
- parameterless: the only thing that needs to be defined is the
genotype (individual structure), all the other components may be used
by default (simplicity for the average end-user).
- seamless integration of genotypes: genotypes may be combined in any
way and any number (e.g. several trees with a vector of binary coded

Rota for hospital nurses?
Hi!
I've got a friend who is a nurse and she constantly complains about the stupid schedules she (and her colleagues) have to work by.
So, being a programmer, I thought, hey, how hard could it be? I still remember a lecture about it 15 years ago so, maybe it's a nice hobby project and I can gain some skills in the field of optimization. So I got myself Eiben and Smith's Introduction to Evolutionary Computing and took to the couch.
Guess what, it /can/ be hard. And I'm still in the middle of figuring how to do it. This is how far I got:
I think I'm pretty clear on how to do the fitness

Genetic algorithm without gene variables
I'm new to this field, but it's interested me for several years now.
I have an idea and I was wondering whether anyone else has tried it.
My idea is that instead of a common genetic algorithmic design with a
set of variables which are mutated and a fitness function to choose
survivors, the program itself is contained as a genetic variable and
the code is mutated.
The fitness function would be a challenging environment in which a
beneficial mutation would result in more offspring or less likely
death.
I've elaborated this concept into more detail and would like to
discuss it or re

Continuous Gray code optimization - scale free optimization
I recently found a paper about a really simple but effective numerical
optimization algorithm based on extending the idea of Gray codes to
the continuous domain.
I've put the paper and some sample code here:
http://code.google.com/p/lemontree/downloads/list
I am working on improving the algorithm at the moment. I have a few
ideas!

Surrogate Variables
I've recently added an interesting feature to my DTREG program
(http://www.dtreg.com) that I think others in this group may be interested
in. The new feature is "Surrogate Variables". This is a method for
imputing the value of a missing predictor variable based on another
(surrogate) variable. The idea of using surrogate variables has been around
for a long time, but I'm not personally familiar with any other predictive
modeling program that has the feature built in as a standard option. I
don't think may people are familar with the idea of surrogate variables.

i am working with a data set (consists of both categorical
