Creating Plane Parallel to current view-pointI know there used to be a macro available for this but I couldn't get to it.
So if anyone is interested I created a new one today here is the code. I
wanted the plane so that I can project onto faces so that I can apply a
hatch to a surface that is partially hidden. Anyway here is the code. What
a stuborn wh@re the math utility is. I had to create a point array and then
pass it to a variant for the darn thing to work right.

Why insert into a view update a view?Pardon my ignorance, but I wonder if you could answer a question.
Why would you ever need to insert into a view?
Also, suppose the view has a restrictive where clause, if the inserted row
doesn't match the where clause, would the insert fail?
What if the view is a multi table join?
What about updates to a view?
Thanks in anticipation :)

2004 Insert Sketch Snaps View Normal to PlaneYesterday, while experimenting in SolidWorks 2004, everytime I
inserted a new sketch the view would automatically snap normal to the
selected plane or face.
This was quite frustrating, since I typically work in oddly rotated
and zoomed in views which had to be reset after each new sketch
shifted the viewpoint in an undesirable way.
I've seen this happen in 2004 before, but today the "snap normal"
behavior only happens to the first sketch inserted into an otherwise
blank part file. I'm glad to NOT be forced into head-on orthographic
views, but am afraid to be forced back int...

Measure tool in Solidworks/EDrawings (point to point, possible?)I've used a reverse engineering software package to generate an .igs
file which I would like to measure in Solidworks or preferably
EDrawings. I cannot do this with my current file but I can with files
I've designed in Solidworks. What I really want to do is click on one
point and then on another and get the linear measurement between the
two points (the way I can in Geomagic.)
If it helps, the file I want to measure has no straight lines, its a

Ted,
You can measure between any two selectable objects, end point, vertex, point
and curve, surface and point etc.
Just select the objects, and click the measure tool. (it looks like a little
ruler)

inserting sketch dimensions from annotation views automaticaly into drawing viewsHi,
This is intriguing me!
How do I insert automatically, sketch dimensions (not feature dimensions)
into drawing views without repeating all dimensions as reference dimension
in part document?
The reason I need them is that in drawing mode there is almost no way to
insert dimensions from silhouette edges besides duplicating edges with
sketch entities - this looks to me too cumbersome. On the other hand, I
don't like the option of Split line feature>Intersection plane, because it
messes all my assembly and other in-context parts + introduces many
unnecessary faces to the model.

Computing transform of plane given transform of points defining planeI'm wondering if anyone has some ideas on approaching this problem:
Suppose you have a plane passing through three 3d points, a b & c,
which form a triangle in that plane. So then you have the plane
normal n = (b-a) X (c-a) / ||(b-a) X (c-a)||, and the plane in 4d
homogenous coords is [n_x, n_y, n_z, -n dot a], where n_x is the x
coordinate of the normal, and so on. Now suppose a b & c are
transformed by matrices A B & C, and the new points are a' = A*a, b' =
B*b and c' = C*c. (And A B & C could be limited to orthogonal
matrices, if necessary). These three points may define a new plane.
My question is, how can we use this information to determine the
matrix representing the transformation of the original plane (in 4d
homogenous form) into the new plane?
Thanks for any help!

I'm quite certain that won't help him, because he's not using a single
matrix to transform all vertices by, in the first place.

how to do the intersection between a plane (know one point and normal vector) and a line (know two points)undefined
Hi
that is pretty straighthforward math.
what you need:
plane equation: ax + by + cz + d = 0
two 3D points p1 and p2
######################################################################
function p_out = intersect_plane_line(a, b, c, d, p1, p2)
v = p1 - p2;
l = - (a*p1(1) + b*p1(2) + c*p1(3) +d) / (a*v(1) + b*v(2) + c*v(3));
p_out = p1 + l*v;

hope that helps

In general, parsing things in LaTeX is a bit tricky. Here's a macro

I also have a function that when I click the mouse, I get the x,y

I get when I click, to what the actual coordinates are in the square.
When I click a place on my square, I get something like: (20,55).
How do I get the actual in relation above (I know that the actual point
should be between
-2.0 --- 2.0 for both x and y.
Any help would be appreciated.

Distance from Point to planeHi,
I am new MATLAB user. I am trying to write a code that will do the following:
I have five points in 3D space that I will input each time. The first of the three points must be used to create a plane. Once the plane is created, the distance from this plane to each of the other two points must be calculated, and summed. So far, I have created a plane, but now I am stuck... this is what I have. Thanks in advance for any help!

p1=input('Point 1: ');
p2=input('Point 2: ');
p3=input('point 3: ');
p4=input('point 4: ');
p5=input('point 5: ');

p = [x,y,z];

Are you sure you have understood and stated the question correctly?
Take the first three points. They form a triangle in a common plane.
Any point equidistant from the first two must lie on the plane which
is the perpendicular bisector of the line segment between them. For
each pair of vertices there will be such a plane. However, any point
equidistant from all three must belong to the *intersection* of the
three planes. Can such common points form a plane?
4 ?
Look at a pyramid ( Tetrahedron ) to see why.

insertion point problem...I have a collection of drawings that I USED to (autocad Map 3d 2005)
insert at 0,0 and they all tiled together (each drawing had its own
insertion point that tiled it nicely). Now with Map 3d 2006 and 2007,
when I try to insert one of these drawings, it comes in at a different
scale and way out in no mans land..... are there some new settings in
2006 or 2007 that I need to change to make these drawings tile once
again ??
thanks !
You need to set the variable "INSUNITS" to a consistent value. This
variable changes the units (meters, millimeters, etc.) of the drawings.
When inserted into another drawing, AutoCad scales the drawing
accordingly.
You can also set this variable through the "DDUNITS" command.

Insert into Materialized ViewHi,
We're pretty new at using Materialized Views, so.......
We have a materialized view: SPECIAL_TST. It seems that the base

They must be in different schemas. Prefix the MV with the schema name.

Are embedded views (Views within views...) evil and if so why?Fellow database developers,
I would like to draw on your experience with views. I have a database
that includes many views. Sometimes, views contains other views, and
those views in turn may contain views. In fact, I have some views in
my database that are a product of nested views of up to 6 levels deep!
The reason we did this was.
1. Object-oriented in nature. Makes it easy to work with them.
2. Changing an underlying view (adding new fields, removing etc),
automatically the higher up views inherit this new information. This
make maintenance very easy.
3. These nested views are only ever used for the reporting side of our
application, not for the day-to-day database use by the application.
We use Crystal Reports and Crystal is smart enough (can't believe I
just said that about Crystal) to only pull back the fields that are
being accessed by the report. In other words, Crystal will issue a
Select field1, field2, field3 from ReportingView Where .... even
though "ReportingView" contains a long list of fields.
Problems I can see.
1. Parent views generally use "Select * From childview". This means
that we have to execute a "sp_refreshview" command against all views
whenever child views are altered.
2. Parent views return a lot of information that isn't necessarily
used.
3. Makes it harder to track down exactly where the information is
coming from. You have to drill right through to the child view to see
the raw table joins etc...
