File Cannot be Compressed

  • Follow

Hello,

I'm having a weird issue. I have a huge Outlook pst (6GB) file that i
want to compress. I have tried WinRAR, WinZip, 7-Zip, WinAce and all of
them are compressiong succesfully my file. However, when I try to open
the archive I always get a CRC corruption! I get the exact same
behaviour with all the archive tools and different archive format!

Any idea what could be wrong?

Thanks

Just a guess ... but it is probably the size of the file. I would try
breaking the
6BG up into smaller files first.

Thanks Michael - how canI break it into a smaller size?

I believe that a lot of these compression apps have a limit of 2GB (max
size of a signed 32 bit integer).
There are probably some out there that support larger sizes and there
might even be some which will
process larger files such as your in smaller peices. But I'm not
familiar enough with them to offer any
suggestions.

No, I doubt that is the problem. All of these archivers claim to support
very large archives, much bigger than 6GB, so either they are being dishonet
about their product capabilities, or there is a problem with the data. The
fact that all 3 archivers report a CRC problem seems to indicate that the
latter is the case.

Firstly, I would do a disk scan to see if the disk has any bad sectors or
not.

Also, at what stage does the error occur, is it when opeing the srchive or
when extracting?

Do they also claim to be able to compress a *single file* of 6GB ?

Should also run a RAM check, because compressing 6GB could be a pretty
heavy hit on the RAM chips.

Sounds like you have bad RAM, honestly. Download memtest86, write it
to a bootable CD or diskette, boot from it, and run a test on your
machine overnight.

run memtest86 - no error reported.

At what percentage (%) the RAR test give a CRC error and what is the
file size and where do you write the compressed output file? because
when you backup a 6GB Outlook .pst file with RAR (normal mode) it
shall become littler then half of the size 2.5-3GB and that is bigger
then 2GB what can be the limit for some backup storage devices (like
USB disk) as maximum file size the file system support, in this case
you can use the split archive option to create multiple volumes.

Ok here is what i have done.

Split the 6GB in 1GB file using hjsplit. Then I tried to compress the
first 1GB file with WinRAR and WinAce (splitting it again in 700MB
volumes). I still got a CRC error when testing the compressed file!

I have been able to compress two other pst files of 500MB and 1GB
without problem. However I'm running in exactly the same problem
trying to archive a folder containing about 3GB of pdf files.

This one is puzzling me.

Strange thing, you can try to check hard disk and HD cable if they are
ok.

HD Workbench is freeware S.M.A.R.T. need to be enabled in BIOS http://
www.diydatarecovery.nl/download.htm an other good one is Spinrite (pay
software) what can create a boot CD and check and/or repair hard disks
http://www.grc.com/sr/spinrite.htm

Compress the entire 6gb file using winrar, and split into 1G chunks
using winrar. Don't split beforehand. Now try it and see if it fails
a test.
