Filemaker is really really slow starting - why?

  • Follow

I recently moved a computer from one part of my network to another. In the
process it was necessary to uninstall Filemaker Pro and re-install another
copy on the computer. I am using Filemaker Pro 4.1 on a Windows 98(se)
350MHz Pentium based computer. After the reinstall, Filemaker Pro now takes
almost 5 minutes to just start the Filemaker program. The computer is on a
network, but Filemaker is not being used in a network mode. The only other
program on this computer that wasn't there before is Norton Anti-Virus 2003.

After it has once been started, it only takes 2 minutes to start up!(still
unacceptably slow). I know this is an older version, but for the time being
I have to use this one. It used to be faster on the same machine.

Does anyone have any ideas as to what I might do to troubleshoot the slow
problem?

Thanks for any info

Start by searching the archives of this newsgroup for threads regarding this
same subject. I believe there were at least three this month. Could be
Norton (if nothing else changed), excess temp files, network "confusion",
corrupted font, etc.

Glenn,

Thanks for the help! It turned out to be excess temp files. Not only
perked up Filemaker, but all the other apps as well. Filemaker is now back
to a respectable 15-20 seconds to fire up even on my slow computer. Thanks
again.
