Instant Web Publishing - IP address from router

  • Follow

I am setting this up as a separate post so as not to interfere with the
discussion started by JMR. My problem seems the same as his.

I am using a LinkSys router, model BEFSR41. I too am trying to setup FMP 7
to publish to the web. I received much help earlier this week from Paul who
got me going in the right direction (I had been trying to upload the FMP
files to my web site and access them from there!!). Now I am trying to set
up access to my computer through port 591 so I can publish FMP. This is my
trouble spot now.

I am a newbie in this area of IP settings. I sent LinkSys an email about
how to go about doing this but have not heard from them as of yet. I can
enter 192.168.1.1 and get into the settings area but I don't know just how
to go about it from there.

Does anyone else use this router? Could you tell me how to go about making
the change I need to make so I can publish to the Web? The documentation I
have on this router has not been helpful, at least not to me with my lack of
experience in this area.

Thank you

I have used the Linksys BEFSR41 to publish a FM 7 database. First
decide what port you what the sever to use. I chose 8000 for a variety
of reasons. Next, be sure the server machine does not use DHCP to
obtain its IP address. You don't say what platform you're using, so I
can't tell you how to perform this step.

Finally, point your browser at the Linksys, probably <http://
192.168.1.1> and enter your password. Click the "Advanced" tab and
select "Forwarding". enter the chosen port number in the "From" and "To"
fields in any vacant row on the display. Check the "TCP", and "Enable"
checkboxes (it won't hurt to check the "UDP" box) and then enter the
last octet of the server's chosen IP address in the box completing the
IP Address.

One reaches your database from the outside world with a URL of the form:
http://aa.bb.cc.dd:pp/ where aa.bb.cc.dd is the address assigned by your
ISP and pp is the port number chosen in step one, above.
