I've using FileMaker Pro Advanced 8.0v1 for a couple of weeks on an old
400 mHz Mac G4 running Mac OS X 10.4.6. No doubt you've gotten these
questions here before, but I'm not finding adequate answers elsewhere:
Yesterday, running FileMaker would (after a few minutes) lead to a a
message saying that Instant Web Publishing couldn't start, and that my
files couldn't be shared. Earlier I had received a message saying that
the files couldn't be shared because of a port number conflict, and to
configure Web publishing to use a different port. I'm trying to use Port
80, and I hadn't had this problem previously.
Once FileMaker came up, the Instant Web Publishing dialog box would no
longer show my IP address, and attempts to turn Web publishing on would
lead to the "Instant Web Publishing cannot start" message. Because of
the earlier port conflict message, I attempted to change the port number
to 591 (per the FileMaker 8 Instant Web Publishing Guide), but that same
message popped up.
The local IT folks had no answers, so I called FileMaker Tech Support.
Based on what I'd told him, the tech guy said that Port 80 must be
blocked. Diagnostic software didn't show this, however, so I called IT
again. Between two calls to FileMaker and some in-person tech support,
we couldn't uncover the problem.
Per FileMaker, I reinstalled the software and the updater. Now I'm
getting the message about the port conflict, so I've switched from Port
80 to Port 591. The problem with Port 591, though, is that the database
(which at this point is very simple) doesn't work at full strength --
sorting doesn't work correctly, etc. This was the case last week, too,
but that problem disappeared when I changed the port number from 591 to 80.
I'd appreciate your thoughts on this. I've used FileMaker for years, but
I'm only now trying to work with Web-published databases, so -- combined
with not being very technical -- I'm a little bit at sea. I hope the
above narrative makes sense.
Thanks for your help.

These are all guess', I don't recall seeing anything like what you're
describing;
- turn off ALL plugins and try
- Click on System Preferences -> Sharing
disable all services and test again
- check the Firewall tab, also on the Sharing Preferences Pane

Another guess: try a different browser. I can't beleive that the choice of
port would affect performance, unless there is a conflict with another
process trying to use the port-- possible, but a stretch. IWP is browser
bound-- it apparently won't work with some browsers, and maybe you're using
one that's not on the list.
Except you're probably using the latest version of Safari, which no doubt is
on the list.
Your post also seems to indicate you have had this configuration, but with
port 80, running properly. What's changed, either on the Filemaker side or
on the G4?

Yeah -- in fact, I think *only* Safari would work.

Only thing I can think of is that I updated from OS X 10.4.5 to 10.4.6
last week or so, but I'm pretty sure everything had gone well even after
the update. The problems didn't begin until Monday.
New development: I mentioned I had switched to Port 591, as instructed
by the documentation. Today I opened FileMaker... and got the message
saying that IWP couldn't be opened. Then came the message that there was
a port conflict. So now the software thinks that both Port 80 *and* Port
591 are blocked, so I'm at a loss.
In any event, thanks for responding. I appreciate your input.

No dice. And as I said in responding to another reply, now all of a
sudden I'm getting the message that Port 591 is blocked, in addition to
Port 80. Things just keep getting better and better....
Thanks for your help, though.
