Linking fields ?

  • Follow

I have created a database for doing chargebacks and I have two fields
(item and cost) which I wish to link. Both these fields I have
configured as pop-up lists. I would like to have the database
configured so that when a particular item is selected from the pop-up
list in the item field a pre-determined cost will be auotomatically
entered in the cost field.
Is this possible, I am using FM Pro 6.0.
Thanks in advance for any help.

What you're describing is basic to every Inventory/Order system. In your
manual or online help, look at "Lookups" and "Relationships" which will
tell you how to construct a relationship between an Inventory file for
your Items, an Order file for each order, and an Order Line Item file
which will hold each item in an order. The Order Line Items will look
up a price from the Inventory file based on the relationship using the
Item number.

Filemaker also, I believe, includes an ordering template with their
files which are installed with the program. Take a look at that.
Understanding relationships is fundamental to what you need to do.
