Lost TCP/IP Connection to Hosted Databases (Server 5.5/Mac)

  • Follow

My Filemaker Server 5.5 was set up to host a number of related databases
both on Appletalk and TCP/IP, and users were able to connect from home using
the 'Specify Hosts' option.

Something has happened that now prevents anyone from getting in via TCP/IP.
When I try to connect using TCP/IP, in or out of the office, I just get a
blank box - it doesn't seem to even try to scan the network!

I've made sure that the databases are in the Filemaker Pro 5.5 folder, I've
made sure that file sharing is turned off, I've ensured that the users are
listed in the Users & Groups file, checked that connect via Appletalk and
TCP/IP are on, etc.

I don't know where to look for the problem anymore... I can't find anything
that says that the databases have to be in a certain folder, or on a certain
level of the drive... Is there something else I should know?

Thanks for any help you can offer...

I don't have a machine currently running OS 9, which is the only OS from
which FMS 5.5 will allow Appletalk, but your question implies that the
configuration you describe used to work. I find that difficult to
understand, if your statement that 'that the databases are in the Filemaker
Pro 5.5 folder' is accurate. I am hoping you meant Filemaker Server, not
'Pro'. The hosted files need to live in the Filemaker Server folder, either
at the same level as the application ('Filemaker Server'), or one level
lower, in their own folder. Users and Groups should play no part in the
configuration-- that has to do with conventional file sharing, using the
OS's protocols, as opposed to Filemaker Server's own network protocols. This
information is all in the manual:

http://www.filemaker.com/downloads/index.html.

It is not clear to me from your post whether by 'file sharing is turned off'
you meant on the server box (where you indeed want it disabled), or on the
clients' machines.

I cannot imagine a good reason to attempt to use Appletalk anyway, but that
is admittedly an answer to a question you were not asking, save for the fact
that you are attempting access via TCP/IP.

So, is it accurate that there used to be TCP/IP Access? Is it accurate that
the files do live in the FMP, not the FMS folder? Can you still gain access
via Appletalk? Are any of the clients using Filemaker 5 (rather than 5.5 or
6)?

If the answer to the first question is yes and the answer to the second
question is no, then one must ask what has changed? The most likely answer
is a new barrier between the LAN and the outside-- either a firewall, or a
re-configuration of an old firewall, a mis-closing of a port, added security
in an institution that no one has bothered to tell you about, etc.

Subject: Mac 10.3.1 FileMaker client problems connecting to FileMaker
5.5 Mac OS 9 host

Customer had 10.2.x, with FileMaker to host (Apple 9 behind Netopia
Cayman 3000 router at her office that has static IP, with port 5003
forwarded to Mac OS 9 machine with FileMaker Server 5.5). She
connected wirelessly to Airport Base, and then to SBC DSL ppoe modem.
She was able to access host by specifying IP number. Everything worked
fine.

After installing 10.3 and subsequently 10.3.1, she could not connect
with FileMaker to host, by specifying IP number. Furthermore, she
could not even ping the host with the IP number. However she can ping
other IP addresses fine, and she can ping other addresses on the WAN
by giving the URL.

I have tried the 10.3.1 firewall all different ways.

I am wondering if the new install overwrote /etc/services or some
other file. I don't see 5003 listed at /etc/services on the customer's
client machine.

Other 10.3.x computers from other homes can log into the office
computer fine.

Interestingly, if the same 10.3.1 computer is disconnected from the
LAN connection and connects via modem thru AOL, then the FileMaker
client account can connect to the host fine.

I also tried bypassing the wireless, and hooking up an ethernet cable
directly to the DSL modem. I was able to access other websites and
ping other websites, but could not ping the office or connect to the
FileMaker database.

I originally thought maybe some router on the way from her home to the
office was misbehaving but this situation has gone on for more than 2
weeks. If there was a misbehaving router somewhere along the way other
people must have the same problem. By the way both the home and the
office are SBC DSL in the San Francisco Bay Area.

I am experiencing a somewhat similar problem with OSX 10.3.1. A VPN
connection that works perfectly on other platforms-- Win2K, 10.2.8--, is
failing. It appears to break at the password, as I see 'negotiating' before
I see 'Disconnecting', but I've not had time to investigate further. I am
using Internect Connect, as I had done in 10.2.8. I seem to recall this
problem mentioned recently somewhere else; if so, it sounds like we are
merely getting what is due us for jumping in too soon, before the roads are
in.

Perhaps someone more familiar with Panther problems knows more.
