Many to Many relationships and Portals

  • Follow

Hi,

I am trying to set up a pricelist database using filemaker pro 6.0.
The pricelist contains items and group items. As you can guess a group
item is composed of several items and an item can be used in several
group items.
I followed the step by step instructions on how to create a many-to-many
relationship in FMP but couldn't get it to work. I had never used portals
before and found the way FMP handles relationships very confusing.
I created the following files:
- a "groups" file that holds the list of all the group items
- a "components" file containing all the component items
- and a "pricelist" file (the join file)

I made sure to select the "allow creation of related records" when setting
up the relationships.
The whole thing is just a mess right now and I'm getting frustrated.
I have some experience with relational databases, but FMP is weird.
Does anyone know of a better tutorial on how to set this up?
Any help is greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Laurent

I don't have time to fully respond really, but I suggest a combination
of your data model and using "multiline keys" with field based value
lists (with related keys in a list)). Do a search for that on google: <
http://www.google.se/advanced_group_search?q=+%22multiline+keys%22+group
:*filemaker*&hl=en&lr=&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8>. That method is what I used in
the end.

And yes, FMs relationships are somewhat confusing if you've used other
products before. Especially as you have to use a lot of them, not only
for basic relationships, but for example for "filtering" out information
as well with concatenated key fields or for checking for duplicates of
entry .

I've asked a lot of questions like this the last months, so follow my
trail:
http://www.google.com/groups?safe=images&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&as_ugroup=*fi
lemaker*&as_uauthors=Michael%20Bystroem&lr=&hl=en> if you wanna.

Some questions do remain unanswered still, but I'm very grateful for
responses from Bridget Eley, John Weinshel, Lynn allen, Howard
Schlossberg, Shadenfroh, Michael Myett, eyebrown@mindspring.com (Steve
Brown), Helpful Harry and other great individuals, who took the time to
respond. It's probably worth searching specifically for earlier
responses from these people.
