Hello All,
I need some help for which I'd be happy to pay:
Windows 2000 workstations on a Windows 2003 SBS domain.
FM Server 5.5 on a dedicated Win 2000 workstation.
15 FM 5 & 6 clients using about 35 files.
I just installed FM Server (we've been using the dedicated box as a peer
host) and I need some help both in understanding some concepts and in
setting up some procedures. Specifically I need help configuring backups,
writing batch files to run scripts, figuring out how to set up ODBC imports
which now cannot be run from the server upon "opening" files and some
general questions.
I don't think this should take more than an hour, maybe two, from any remote
location although if you're in the vicinity of Kingston, New York you could
help me in person.
Please contact me directly by phone or email if you're interested.
Thanks,
Greg Shifrin

Well, I live in Paris France, so I'm a bit far but I may, here, among
others, come with some advices.
First put your 35 files into a folder inside the FileMaker Server
folder. Make sure that that folder is not shared in the Windows sense.
You may for example put the whole 'Program files' folder non-shared.
Those files are set to 'multiusers' in FMP.
Set FileMaker Server (FMS) as a 'Service' of Windows.
Create on the 'c:' level a 'Backup' folder and inside it, one Monday
folder, one Tuesday folder etc., plus a 'Zip' folder. Then go to the
'Console' of FMS and set on the left the backup of the files to be done
on Mondays at 2am into the 'Monday directory, Tuesday at 2am into the
Tuesday directory, ..., and also everyday a backup of all files at 3am
on the 'Zip' directory.
Then you can create some simple batch files to copy those backups into
your media of you choice : Zip, CD, other hard disk...using the regular
Windows scheduling.
On each workstation you make a simple FMP file with a script launched at
start saying 'Open(CallingFile)' assuming you have a calling file in
your base that opens all the 35 files. On each PC, you initiate once for
all, that 'Open' line to open that file through the FMP 'Host' button. A
given user will open that local FMP file to open remotely your bases.
That's about it. I don't know much about OBDC.
Please feel free to raise any question.

Thanks so much for responding, and with some great suggestions. However,
given my overall situation paying a consultant is the way to go. Thanks
again though.
