Read Only Filemaker Pro 4.0

Apologies in advance if this has been covered. I'm new to Filemaker Pro
4.0 - PC version (I use a Mac). I'm the new archive secretary for a
fraternal organization that has a database (very basic) of California
Pioneers. The database is a collection of records grouped into (so far)
68 volumes (some 40,000 individuals total). The 68th volume was
completed a few years ago and we have a lot of new submissions (on
paper) to be entered into the database (Vol 69). A helpful guy (long
gone) created the database for us in Filemaker Pro. There is a "new
submission form" which, when completed, gets added to the volume in
progress. Trouble is, the entire file including the existing records
and new submission form seems to be read only. We do have the S/N for
the FM software but cannot figure out how to make the file itself
read/write. We've tried creating a new file (which duplicates the
preferences evidently), exporting...etc. Can anyone help?

One Possibility: If the files were ever on a compact disc under windows 98, the
system would have set them to read only. When they were then copies back on to a
hard drive, they would retain that. Right click on the files in Windows, and use
"properties" to see if the "read only" box is checked. if so, uncheck that and you
will likely be back in business.
