MS Access SQL 'Deep-copy' Query Help...

MS Access Database

I'm working on a 'Reorder' function for my friend's database.
Essentially, it is a 'deep-copy' of several related tables. Here is
the table setup...

tblSalesOrder
SalesOrderID (PK) Field1, Field2, etc

	tblWorkOrder
WorkOrderID (PK), SalesOrderID (FK), Field1, Field2, etc

		tblOperation
OperationID (PK), WorkOrderID (FK), Field1, Field2, etc

I am able to successfully create a 'reorder' of the SalesOrder and
WorkOrder but I am having trouble with the Operation per WorkOrder.

Sample Data:

tblWorkOrder
WorkOrderID	SalesOrderID	Field1
25 6 ExWO1
26 6 ExWO2
27 13 ExWO1
28 13 ExWO2

tblOperation
OperationID	WorkOrderID	Field1
3 25 ExOp1
4 25 ExOp2
5 26 ExOp3

Note, this sample is taken AFTER the reorder at the SalesOrder and
WorkOrder level.
Desired data after the reorder at the Operation level would be:

tblOperation
OperationID	WorkOrderID	Field1
3 25 ExOp1
4 25 ExOp2
5 26 ExOp3
~
6 27 ExOp1
7 27 ExOp2
8 28 ExOp3

Where 6,7,8 are the 'new' records...

I tried my hand at a few SQL queries myself, but I keep hitting a dead
end. I would supply them here, but I'm afraid they probably wouldn't
be of much help.

Please let me know if there is anything else I could provide to help
with finding a solution. Thank you!

The operation of your database should not depend on the order of data
in any table unless it can't be helped -- and that's very seldom. But
sometimes I like to tidy up the keys anyway. The following should
work.

Make a field in tblSalesOrder called OldSalesOrderID. Make another
field in tblWorkOrder called OldWorkOrderID. I am referring to the
original tables with their original keys. Use an Update Query to put
the key values into the 'Old' fields. After reordering any of the
keys, use the 'Old' and new key values in the related table to update
the foreign key values. An example should make it clearer:

After adding the fields the tables should look like:

tblSalesOrder
SalesOrderID
OldSalesOrderID
=2E..

tblWorkOrder
WorkOrderID
OldWorkOrderID
SalesOrderID
=2E..

tblOperation
OperationID
WorkOrderID
=2E..

Example:

tblSalesOrder
SalesOrderID
1
2
3
4

tblWorkOrder
WorkOrderID SalesOrderID
2 1
4 4
5 5
6 5
8 7

tblOperation
OperationID WorkOrderID
1 2
2 4
3 4
4 4
5 5
6 5
7 6
8 8

Add the suggested fields of type Long. Then run the following
queries:

UPDATE tblSalesOrder SET OldSalesOrderID =3D SalesOrderID;
UPDATE tblWorkOrder SET OldWorkOrderID =3D WorkOrderID;

tblSalesOrder
SalesOrderID OldSalesOrderID
1 1
2 4
3 5
4 7

tblWorkOrder
WorkOrderID SalesOrderID OldWorkOrderID
2 1 2
4 4 4
5 5 5
6 5 6
8 7 8

tblOperation
OperationID WorkOrderID
1 2
2 4
3 4
4 4
5 5
6 5
7 6
8 8

Then do your reordering, perhaps by deleting the primary key and
creating it again. That's what I did for this example. Fix
tblOperation first.

UPDATE tblOperation INNER JOIN tblWorkOrder ON
tblOperation.WorkOrderID =3D tblWorkOrder.OldWorkOrderID SET
tblOperation.WorkOrderID =3D tblWorkOrder.WorkOrderID;

tblOperation
OperationID WorkOrderID
1 2
2 4
3 4
4 4
5 5
6 5
7 6
8 8

Then delete OldWorkOrderID from tblWorkOrder.

Repeat the process with tblSalesOrder and tblWorkOrder with
SalesOrderID and OldSalesOrderID.

James,

That is quite a clever solution, however, I would much rather not have
to change the table definitions around, if possible. Instead, perhaps
your solution could be implemented with a temporary hash-table? I will
look into this.

Otherwise, are there any other, VBA/SQL-based solutions that anyone
could think of?

Thanks for your time!

Using Access to 'access' an sql database on a webserver
Is this possible? I know about a bit about ODBC and found how to import an ODBC database stored on the computer, however I am after accessing an SQL database stored on a webserver. I'd like to keep it up to date, but that could probably be done with a macro. How to add records with 'Autonumber' property to a MS Access database using LabVIEW?
I am trying to write to a MS Access database. Everything works fine as long as I add data to all records at the same time. The database I am using have two tables (just for testing) with a 'one-to-many' relationship between the two. They both have a PrimaryKey with the data type 'AutoNumber'. From what I understand those numbers should be automatically generated when new data is written to the DB. I can't get that to work with LabVIEW. I am using the function 'DB Tools Insert Data.vi'. ms access to sql server query help!
Hi All, I'm desperately trying to use an old access query and translate it to be used in SQL enterprise manager. The dataset i'm trying to update is too large for access (28 million rows). IIf([TableName]![FIELDNAME] Like "??0*",Left([TableName]![FIELDNAME], 2) & Right([TableName]![FIELDNAME],4),IIf([TableName]![FIELDNAME] Like "?0*",Left([TableName]![FIELDNAME],1) & Right([TableName]! [FIELDNAME], 4),[TableName]![FIELDNAME])) This works to remove padding zeros in the middle of a postcode field. eg SR04 PQJ would be SR4 PQJ or S03 4PY would be S3 4PY. It does this by finding all postcodes that begin with either ??0 or ? 0 and then recompiles them using concatenation. This works fine in access but i can't translate it to be read in SQL server. I'm aware of the differences in wildcard chars and the CONCAT function but cannot seem to get it right. Could someone please help!! In SQL Server: 1. There is no such function as Iif, you need to use the CASE function. 2. The string delimiter is a single quote mark, not a double quote mark. 3. "*" is not a wildcard character, you need to use the "%" character. 4. The "!" character will not be recognised, use a full stop character. 5. The "&" operator does not exist, the nearest equivalent is the "+" operator. SQL Server 2000 Books Online can be downloaded for free: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?Fa...

I think you're going to have to expand a little bit more in your question here, as is not 100% quite clear what you're trying to do. You might want to make a little bit of a distinction between MS access, the development system that allows you to write code, build forms, and build reports, and that of the database engine that you choose to use with MS access. When you build an application MS access, you then choose your database engine, that might be oracle, SQL server, or perhaps more often leave the default jet database. So when you say make a client access application, are you talking about a piece of software that you plan to install and each computer? The fact that your introducing the issue of java further complicates your question. Perhaps your question is simply you have some java code running on a server, and with to open a mdb file (an access database file). In this situation you're not really using MS access at all here (you using what is called the jet database engine to read that mdb file). For all the trouble in this type of sce...
