Where can I get access to a beta Sharepoint 2010 server
Does anyone know of any place where they are offering a beta version of
the Sharepoint 2010 server so I can try out some of the new Access 2010
features? Unfortunately I do not have a spare 64 bit capable PC lying
around unused.

I've been looking at this as well. If one of the SharePoint projects
materializes, I'll be buying a new server.

OK. The only Sharepoint 2010 beta web services site I found has
discontinued providing it. Likely because Microsoft does not allow beta
software to be used for commercial purposes.
At the suggestion of Microsoft support, I am trying to install my own
copy of Sharepoint 2010 beta. I have an x64 capable PC (sharepoint 2010
beta requires this). MS says you need 8 gig memory but elsewhere they
say 4 is enough.
I found I could download a 180-day trial of Microsoft 2008 Server R2.
So I created another partition on my main drive and installed the server
software. So far so good. The dual boot on my PC (with Vista ultimate
on the other part of the disk) works well.
Then I installed Sharepoint 2010 beta. Install went OK. I ran the
configuration process and the process of loading the sample data failed.
Anyone else try this approach to making Sharepoint 2010 beta available
to try out Access services? If so did you encounter the problem I noted
above and if so how did you solve it?
Other things I need to do to get it up and running?
I had planned to use Virtual PC 2007 to run a virtual PC with Windows XP
as the client with Access 2010 beta to communicate with Sharepoint 2010
beta.
Bob
P.S. I had some difficulty finding the sharepoint 2010 beta product key.
In case someone else has this issue, here it is

In case you cant find it on download page after registration page:

Have you read this:

blic-beta.html
I nearly had a nervous breakdown just reading it, let alone
contemplating trying to actually do it.

I agree. However it was interesting that despite the errors he noted,
it still worked for Access services purposes.
Maybe I should try mine and see if it is functional - as is.
Hopefully there are more people out there with experience installing
Sharepoint 2010 beta

Here is a link to instructions on installing Sharepoint 2010 Beta
http://blogs.msdn.com/opal/archive/2009/11/16/installation-notice-for-sharepoint-2010-public-beta.aspx
The above instructions were posted by Jie Li, Technical Product Manager
for Sharepoint.

http://www.mukalian.com/blog/post/2009/11/21/SharePoint-Server-2010-Beta-Server-Farm-Installation-Go!.aspx
This web site lists a number of posts on installing Sharepoint. It is
where I got some of the above
http://www.sharepointbuzz.com/archive/2009/11/24/sharepoint-2010-beta-installation-roundup.aspx
One last thing, from my reading, it seems suggested to install as a
"server farm" rather than "stand alone".
Again, I would really like to hear from others here who have
SUCCESSFULLY installed Sharepoint 2010 beta.

Here is an update. I removed my partially installed Sharepoint 2008
beta and started over using the document listed immediately above.
Since I had successfully installed Microsoft Server 2008 R2 I downloaded
and installed the first fix he mentions. Installed without issue.
This time I also specified a "Farm" not standalone.
I think I may have gotten further - who knows.
I got stuck in providing a user account and password for use by
Sharepoint. Since the installation was part of a Farm, it had to be an
Active Directory account. but I didn't have Active Directory installed.
Only one stand along PC.
So I located and downloaded Active Directory Domain Services. I created
a new "forest". I was unsure sometimes as to how to respond but
generally OK. Re-ran the Sharepoint configuration and got past the user
account problem.
Next was an error traced to inability to communicate with SQL server.
Most likely a firewall issue. So I turned off the firewall. No joy.
When I looked closer I found no SQL server installed on my Server 2008
R2. Who was I to asssuuumme that it would be included.
so I found a 180 day trial of SQL server 2008. To access the download I
had to register with Microsoft. When I tried to log in it failed
because I apparently did not have Java script available.
so I found java script but my IE settings would not allow the download.
So I found out how to modify the IE settings but found I couldn't
because the settings were now controlled by the Policy Editor for the
Domain I had set up for ADS.
so I learned about the Policy editor and found out how to change the
settings to hopefully allow downloads in my trusted internet sites.
The new settings did not take effect. so I figured I would reboot and see.
Just then I decided on a shortcut. I rebooted but back into Vista and
downloaded Java and SQL server install files.
Now back to Server 2008 R2.
Installed java on the server 2008 RS.
Did some further reconfiguration of the polices governing IE security.
Set everything to low so I could download at will.
Installed SQL server 2008 Enterprise 180-day trial.
Got it to install.
Reran the Sharepoint config. It failed with a error that it needed one
of two specific versions of sql server. For 2008, this was
sql server 2008 SP1 cu2
The message said I could get it from
support.Microsoft.com/kb/970315
I had a problem downloading that version.
I looked for others and found
SQL Server 2008 R2 Nov CTP that was released 11/2009
Installed it
Ran the sharepoint config again. New failure:
"Failed to provision the sharepoint central administration web
application" and "Could not find file
c:\inetpub\wwwroot\wss\virtualdirectories\45730\web.config
I Googled for causes. No joy.
Tried to look to see if the file were in fact there.
Found I could not access the subdirectory.
I was using my default logon, which had administrator privileges in
windows but that was apparently not enough.
So I gave everyone full access to the c:\ drive and subdirectories.
Again, since this is an internal use test box, I am not very concerned
about security.
Finally the configuration finished successfully and it took me to the
sharepoint administration page
http://bobserver:5762/
If I have time I will try to do a better summary of what pieces were
required, where I got them, and the options I chose. Unfortunately I
did not write all this down step by step - only the big stuff.
If someone wants this from me soon, please advise as that will like spur
me on.
Of course I still have to test accessibility from Access 2010 beta but
at this point I am highly optimistic.
To summarize you only have to:
.. Have a 64-bit capable PC with enough disk space to dual boot and at
least 4 gig memory
.. Install Microsoft Server 2008 R2
.. Install a MS patch
..Install Active Directory Domain Services
.. Install SQL server 2008 R2 Nov CTP
.. Install Sharepoint 2010 beta
.. Configure Sharepoint 2010 beta
and in case you need to download anything from the web you need to
.. configure the Policies governing IE security to allow downloads
.. download and install java if you need to authenticate to Microsoft to
get software
Hope you have as much fun as I have had. I spent about 15 hours.

I have been trying to install all the pieces necessary to have
Sharepoint 2010 beta on my own PC, so I can test out interaction between
Access 2010 beta and Sharepoint 2010 beta.
Finally SUCCESS.
In case anyone else wants to try this, here is some details of the major
steps and sources of software needed to install.
Gateway GT5432 Desktop PC
Purchased June 2007
Primary O/S Windows Vista Ultimate
AMD Athlon 64 5000+ processor
3 gig memory (yes that is right)
320 gig disk space
54 gig partition for Windows 2008 Server R2
Only 25 gig was used in the server partition after I got
everything working.
Resized the existing c: drive to provide space for the server installation
Vista: Control Panel, Administrative tools, Computer Management,
Storage, Disk Management
Microsoft Server 2008 R2 180 day free trial
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsserver2008/en/us/trial-software.aspx
Burn ISO image to DVD. Select custom install and install into
the new partition (carefully so you don't wipe out your
current O/S)
Windows fix windows6.1-km976462-x64.msu
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkID=166231
Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2 Nov CTP 180 day trial
http://www.microsoft.com/sqlserver/2008/en/us/r2.aspx
Microsoft Active Directory Domain Services (AD DS)
Open Help and search for "Installing active directory domain services"
Select the first item listed with this same title
Follow the interactive installation process
Open Initial Configuration Tasks (in tray bottom left)
Add roles
Select Active Directory Domain Services
Next ........
Microsoft Sharepoint 2008 R2 beta
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/evalcenter/ee388573.aspx
Microsoft Office 2010 Professional Plus public beta
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/evalcenter/ee390818.aspx
Note I chose to install it on the Server 2008 rather than a virtual
machine.
I hope this helps someone else.
