Filter a text field for only numerics

Is there a way to filter a string field (nvarchar) for only the
numerics.
Example, I have a column that users use to enter phone numbers.
Sometimes they enter 555-1212, sometimes 5551212, sometimes 555 1212,
sometimes (001)555-1212. (Unfortunately that was the client's
requirement to be able to enter numbers that way. There are no alphas,
but spaces, hyphens and () are permitted.)
What I want to do is to create a stored procedure that allows the user
to search for phone numbers so that if the user searches for "5551212"
or "5121" etc. it will find all the above.
Is this possible?

Example

@NumberSearched varchar(10)

SELECT
c.UniqueID,
c.Name
FROM
dbo.tblClients c
WHERE
SomeMagicCleaningFunction(c.PhoneNumber) LIKE '%' + @NumberSearched +
'%'

Thanks,
lq

Hi

As there are a finite number of characters you want to replace then probably
the easiest way it use:

SELECT
REPLACE(REPLACE(REPLACE(REPLACE(Phone,'-',''),'(',''),')',''),SPACE(1),'')
AS Phone
FROM (SELECT '555-1212' AS Phone
UNION ALL SELECT '5551212'
UNION ALL SELECT '555 1212'
UNION ALL SELECT '(001)555-1212') Tels

If you do this when the data is inserted it may be easier.

And choosing the numbers can be like:

SELECT Phone,
REPLACE(REPLACE(REPLACE(REPLACE(Phone,'-',''),'(',''),')',''),SPACE(1),'')
AS Cleaned_Phone
FROM (SELECT '555-1212' AS Phone
UNION ALL SELECT '5551212'
UNION ALL SELECT '555 1212'
UNION ALL SELECT '(001)555-1212') Tels
WHERE
REPLACE(REPLACE(REPLACE(REPLACE(Phone,'-',''),'(',''),')',''),SPACE(1),'')
like '%5551212%'

Since users may want to see numbers the way they were entered, it may
not be good to remove the non-digits on inserted. However, you could
add a computed column to the table, and then also index this column
for searches:

CREATE TABLE phnumbers (phoneno varchar(22) NOT NULL,
                           phoneno_num as convert(varchar(12),
                                          REPLACE(
                                          REPLACE(
                                          REPLACE(
                                          REPLACE(phoneno, '-', ''),
                                                           '(', ''),
                                                           ')', ''),
                                                           SPACE(1), ''))
   )
   go
   CREATE INDEX num_ix ON phnumbers(phoneno_num)
   go
   insert phnumbers(phoneno)
   SELECT '555-1212'
    UNION ALL SELECT '5551212'
    UNION ALL SELECT '555 1212'
    UNION ALL SELECT '(001)555-1212'
   go
   select * from phnumbers
   go
   drop table phnumbers

Thanks for the ideas. Rather than create a new column to hold redundant
data I used
a variation of:
REPLACE(REPLACE(REPLACE(REPLAC=ADE(Phone,'-',''),'(',''),')',''=AD),SPACE(1=
),'')

like '%' + @NumberSearched + '%' in my query and it works very well.

Text filtering in a text field
Hi, am new to SKILL and would like to do some text checking and filtering for illegal characters in the text field. Meaning I have a text field in my form that is only to be with text, not any of the symbols (i.e. ~!@#$%^&* and so on). Sorting a table on text field as if numeric
I just received a request from a customer who wants to sort test results = according to an "ID" field, which is set up as 20 characters in a dBase = III+=20 database using the BDE and D4pro. For instance, he wants the results = ordered=20 as follows: 124 1231 1234 Probably the easiest solution would be to change 124 to 0124. Apparently = this customer has used a simple sequence of numbers, possibly starting = from=20 1 and going to (at least) 1234 per his example. Convert Numeric Field to text in Query
I have a mess on my hands. I have a whole set of queries and reports (almost a whole app, really) that has "location" as a text field. Sometimes it's a number and a few times it's text (001, 002, and ADV, TRN, MER). I now have to link on "LocationCode" (text)and "StoreNum" (numeric - from the other application - all numeric). I want the query to put the values for 001 from the numeric side with the values for 001 from the text side, but I keep getting "type mismatch in expression". Is there a way to tell Access to use the Text as Numeric or vice-versa in either of the underlying queries so I can get what I need? I need the Text fields - ADV, TRN, MER (and their associated Payroll numbers)from the table/query that is text LocationCode. Converting database to MS-SQLServer from PostGRESQL
Forgive me if this question is a bit too generic, if it is, feel free to just not respond. I have a database which has been running in PostgreSQL for a number of years at this stage which I want to port into MS SQL server. It seems that the SQL that Postgre outputs when I do a backup is not syntactically correct within MS-SQL server. My question is, does anyone have any documentation on how to convert a database from the Postgre platform to SQL server? Is it possible using an ODBC connection to import a database structure including table definitions, views etc into SQL Server? Failing this, does anyone have any suggestions on where I might start - I did attempt to go through the SQL code and modify it to suit SQL server, but it's about 3,500 lines of code excluding the insert statements (which themselves are also wrong) and almost every line needs something changed when comparing SQL syntax from Postgre to MSSQL server Thanks in advance for any comments/suggestions. You can do this using single quotes, but you'll run into problems if your string contains an apostrophe in it (O'Reilly), so my usual advice is to use Chr$(34): DSum("[tot]","[Query1]"," Expr1= " & [Expr1] & "AND MC= " & Chr$(34) & [MC] & Chr$(34)) If you're not concerned about apostrophes: DSum("[tot]","[Query1]"," Expr1= " & [Expr1] & "AND MC= '" & [MC] & "'") Exagerated, so that the quotes are easier to see: DSum("[tot]","[Query1]"," Expr1= " & [Expr1] & "AND MC= ' " & [MC] &...

Parsing out data on text field in MS ACCESS
Hi All, A newbie here having a hard time figuring out how to parse out the City, State and Zip from a text field. I have a text field called "Registration" with a size of 40. In this field there are city, state and zip information. I need to seperate all three items into their own respective fields. Unfortunately, the information varies in size and location. An example, would be: "LOS ANGELES CA90063 ", while another record would be "LOS ANGELES CA90063". If anyone can point me to any references or examples on the web, it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. Assuming that you have "inherited" this structure, and need to sort it out one time, after which it will stay in its separate fields, I'd suggest this procedure: Export the table to Excel. How to link fields in MS word document to Access database
Anyone have experience in linking fields in an MS Word document to an access database? What I am considering doing is taking an existing fill-in-the fields word document, for which I cannot now save the data, and allow it to be opened with no data, have the fields filled in and then save the data in an Access database. I also want to later select the document (from a file in the database), open the word document and populate the fields from the database. I want that component to be able to receive and consume certain alphabetic characters even if that text field has the focus. Unfortunately, when the text field has focus and I type an alphabetic character, the text field accepts and consumes the character. This does not even make sense, since only numeric input can be accepted validly in that field. How can I prevent the text field from consuming these characters which should not be in there in the first place so that my application can process these keyboard events correctly? Or is there some other type of component I should be using for typed numeric input? My application's window also has some radio buttons and a slider; and, when any of those components has the focus, my application does get the keyboard input events as I intended. So I am not far from the function I seek. The text field is a nuisance for interfering with keyboard input to which it should not even be paying any attention. Thanks for any pointers, David V. ...

How to import a tab delimited text file into MS Access database
Hi, I have the following task to be done in VC++ 6.0. I have a tab delimited text file that needs to be imported into a MS Access table. The table is created and the table structure is defined using DAO methods. So now I have to fill this table with the data in the text files. For a few rows in the text file, the number of columns could be less than the number of columns in the table. Can anyone please post me the code to do this. Thanks a ton in advance. Pradeep wrote: > I have the following task to be done in VC++ 6.0. We'd be happy to give you the VBA code, but do you really want to throw away your C++ and use Microsoft Access for the job? If you want to keep C++, you can ask for C++ code in another newsgroup, because we'd just be guessing. -- Message posted via http://www.accessmonster.com ...
