How to insert/update a column with text data with other columns in a table?

Hi,

How should we insert/update a (text data) column in a table?

I have a table “Server” (Server Name, IP Address,
System_Info).

The “System_Info” column contains several rows of data. On
the other side the
“Server Name” & “IP Address’ column contain
only one row.

I was trying to insert/update the “System_Info” column via
SQLLOADER but I didn’t get the desired results.

Could some one suggest how should we insert or update the column like
“System_Info” in a table, which contains several rows of
data (Text data) with other columns?

Thanks

Wolfgang

For Example:

Server Name IP Address System_Info

Test 127.0.0.1 OS Name: Microsoft

What do you mean by "column contains several rows of data. "? Columns
don't contain rows. Rows contain columns, not vice versa.

By your example, I'd guess that you're expecting a row with server
name, ip address, and a comment, followed by several other rows with
more comments that relate to that server name and/or ip address.
Further, your example seems to indicate that these additional rows
will have neither the server name nor the ip address. If so, this
will never work, as there is nothing to relate the additional rows to
the first one.

Re-design your table, basically.

For example, have a table just for IP Address. A separate table for
Server Name, which can be linked to the one for IP Address. And a third
for System Info, which will have IP as part of its primary key, and
would therefore in your example contain 3 records for 127.0.0.1. To get
the report out almost as you've displayed it here, you'd join all three
tables together on IP Address.

Or, if you don't fancy three tables to do the job, make the SYSTEM_INFO
column a CLOB data type, and just insert multiple-lines of what amounts
to free-form text.

Or, if you want to get silly, create the SYSTEM_INFO column as a nested
table or Varray.

It all depends, really.

1- What does the table describe look like?
2- What does the input sqlldr file look like?
3- And what did you control cards look like?

I realize the above is an example of the data you are dealing with but
you did not state it was taken from the input file or just a display
of some of the information you are working with.

If none of the MS Server text data exceeds 4000 bytes you can store it
in a varchar2 column otherwise I think this is a job for a CLOB.

Thanks Howards & Evevryone

It is very nice to saw the suggestion form you.
Could you send some sample about clob column as you discussed, if posible?

Updating Oracle database from SQL Server as linked table

This appears to mean that there's a field on the Oracle side that was defined as Number without any precision information. How can I rewrite this query to actually work? Global Temporary Table with column of type ROWID and Oracle Updates
All, I have proposed a solution which uses a global temporary table to remember an updated record via its rowid. Concerns have been risen that this will cause trouble in case of an update of the Oracle version (currently 10.2.0.2) to another version with a changed format for ROWID type columns. My reply was that during an upgrade of DB software there will be no segments of the global temporary table because of the way Oracle allocates segments (see [1]): only on first insert in a session a segment will be allocated and consequently only then data blocks will be formatted. So there should be no issue at all even if the format of ROWID changes. Is my reasoning correct? (I could not find anything relevant to this in metalink.) Oracle Text Search Across Multiple Columns and Different Tables
Hi, I'm working on a general site seach which needs to search up to about 20 unrelated tables. I've managed to get a basic version of this working using Oracle Text (10g) with a materialized view, but I'm not sure how this will perform when the table sizes grow (say in the region of 100s of 1000s of records). Do anyone know if performance will be an issue using a materialized view for Oracle Text search? Is it efficient to use a materialized view to concatenate the data from, say, around 20 tables? Is that any other methods that can be used to index multiple columns on multiple tables? I've seen an example where multiple related tables are joined and indexed using a stored procedure here: (http://groups.google.co.uk/group/comp.databases.oracle.server/browse_thread/thread/17dd4ddcf30936b3/f6e6d73b417397d8?lnk=st&q=oracle+text+search+multiple+tables&rnum=1&hl=en#f6e6d73b417397d8) However in my case the tables are unrelated. Insert or update into a Image column causes data to double in size
We are experiencing problems inserting or updating image fields from one table to another in SQL Server. When we do this what ever size of file we insert is doubled in size when it is inserted into the destination table. This happens in insert and update queries, and if we use DTS. Any help would be greatly appreciated skyhawker9 (andyh@bmtdsl.co.uk) writes: > We are experiencing problems inserting or updating image fields from > one table to another in SQL Server. > > When we do this what ever size of file we insert is doubled in size > when it is inserted into the destin...

Update Guid column on any update to table row
I have a column Last_Updated (uniqueidentifier) on a table. I'd like this column to get a new guid (NEWID()) each time any column in the row is updated. Is there an automatic way to do this outside of triggers? Here's an example of what I'm looking for: CREATE TABLE GuidTest (ID INT PRIMARY KEY IDENTITY, Status INT, LastUpdated UNIQUEIDENTIFIER DEFAULT (NEWID())) INSERT INTO GuidTest (Status) VALUES (10) INSERT INTO GuidTest (Status) VALUES (20) INSERT INTO GuidTest (Status) VALUES (30) SELECT ID, Status, LastUpdated FROM GuidTest UPDATE GuidTest SET Status = 31 WHERE ID = 3 SE...

How to use oracle text to search multiple columns across multiple tables join
How can I use ORACLE TEXT to perform full text search on multiple columns across multiple tables join? For example consdier the following 3 tables Table Book { bookid number(8), title varchar2(2000), description varchar2(4000) } Table Author { authorid number(8), authorDescription varchar2(4000), age number(3) } Table AuthorToBook { bookid number(8), authorid number(8) } I will join the above 3 tables and then perform search with the following constraint 1. The word "network" must appear in Author.authorDescription and (Book.description or Book.Title) 2. author's age must be > 20 One way to achieve this is create a CTXSYS.CONTEXT type index for each of the varchar2 columns in the 3 table and then use the following query select Book.*, Author.* from Book, AuthorToBook, Author where Book.bookid = AuthorToBook.bookid and AuthorToBook.authorid = Author.id and Author.age > 20 and contains(Author.authorDescription, 'network', 1) > 0 and (contains(Book.title, 'network', 1) > 0 or contains(Book.description, 'network', 1) > 0) This query is very inefficient. Is there anyway to create one index across all the varchar2 columns to achive the same purpose? Please give code snippet if you can. Thanks >How can I use ORACLE TEXT to perform full text search on multiple >columns across multiple tables join? For example consdier the following >3 tables > >Table Book { > boo...

DataBase Table Columns
Is there a max. Number of columns that can be used in a Table using 5.5.3 ? I know with 5.2 if I had more than 15 columns in a table the whole database became unstable I was just wondering if that still holds true or if 100 columns in a table is as stable as just 1 column. Single column footnotes in a double column text
Greetings, Could someone please post to the group an example output routine that would give me some clues how to modify the plain.tex output routine to allow single column footnotes (i.e. the footnote field spans the bottom of the page) with double column body text. Thanks, Nathan Miles ...

Link between view columns and base table columns
Despite some digging in the SQL Reference manual, I can not figure out how to determine, for a given view (only known at run-time), the link between a view column and the corresponding base table column. Example: CREATE VIEW V1 (A,B,C) AS SELECT D,E,F FROM T1 To column A of view V1, correspond column D of table T1. To column B of view V1, correspond column E of table T1. To column C of view V1, correspond column F of table T1. Can this information be obtained by querying the catalog (DB2 V8) ? If yes, how ? Thanks for your help, Renaud. I'm not sure whether it is named this way in 8.2, but in 9.5 there is a view syscat.viewdep that describe what table(...

Column-spanning equations in two-column text.
(I should note that I don't presently need a solution to this -- I merely got started thinking about it, and am now curious how to solve it.) There's a style of dealing with long equations in two-column text when they absolutely can't be split short enough to fit in a single column, which looks something like this: text text text text text text text text text text text text -------------- f(x) = x^5 - x^4 + x^3 + cos(2) -------------- text text text text text text text text text text text text That is, the equation spans both columns, and there is some distinguishing mark (horizontal lines, optionally joined at the end, in the cases I've seen) to indicate which of the columns the equation belongs to. How difficult is it to do this in LaTeX? How would I go about doing it, were I to need to do so? Also, as sort of a meta-question: does anyone have any examples of this that they think were done particularly well (particularly with regards to the choice of how to distinguish which column the equation belongs to)? The question came up because the publisher my wife works for is considering a move to a two-column format for some of their journals, and they seem to still be working out this detail. - Brooks -- The "bmoses-nospam" address is valid; no unmunging needed. ...

converting 1 column data into 2 columns
This should be an easy puzzle to solve. I have data in the following format: 1 1 2 2 2 3 4 4 6 7 7 What I want is to convert the data so that the first column shows the data, and the second number shows the number of occurrences (I'm going to feed it to gnuplot). So the converted file should look like this: 1 2 2 3 3 1 4 2 6 1 7 2 Any help would be appreciated. TIA, tropicflite tropicflite wrote: > This should be an easy puzzle to solve. How to select all tables that have the same column name and column value
Hi everybody, I know how to select out all the tables that have the same column name using SELECT TABLE_NAME FROM ALL_TAB_COLUMNS WHERE COLUMN_NAME = 'column_name'. I need to take it a step further to select only those tables that have the same column name and a certain field value. For instance, I want all the tables that have an element called last_update_date and the last_update_date = '31-dec-08'. Is it possible to do that? Something like this would do: set serveroutput on size 100000 declare c cursor; f number; begin for tbl in (select owner, table_name from all_tab_columns where column_name =3D 'LAST_UPDATE_DATE') loop begin execute immediate 'select 1 from "'||tbl.owner||'"."'||tbl.table_n...
