Search Subdirectories

We have a new ERP system that uses a Progress OpenEdge backend. A project manager will type in a CAD file number, and the system will pull in metadata (e.g. dimensions, materials, machine routing, etc.) from the appropriate ArtiosCAD file previously created by a designer on a FreeBSD file server. The ERP vendor says the system can only search in one directory for CAD files, and cannot search subdirectories. This is a problem, as the designers have hundreds of thousands of CAD files stored by client, year, job and job type. Either we figure out a way to automatically copy newl

How Business Intelligence and GIS are becoming more integrated.

Most people may think of geographic information systems (GIS) simply as Google maps or the navigation system for their car, but GIS tools do a lot more than help people get from A to B. Businesses are adding a spatial dimension to data to help make critical decisions in this tough economy. We recently interviewed Yellowfin CEO Glen Rabie to find out more about this topic and why Yellowfin Business Intelligence with spatial data is so much more than just Google Maps. Q. How does GIS integrated with BI differ from the traditional GIS approach? A. A typical spatial specialists appr

Vantage temporary files - safe to delete?

Greetings, I'm working with a company who is using an older version of Vantage (6.10). I've noticed that several users have numerious temporary files in their epicor working directories (under \epicor\mfgwrk61). Most of these files begin with a letter sequence of either DBI, LBI or SRT. Some of these files are quite huge. In cases where drive space is becoming limited, am I safe to delete these files periodically? Should I keep files with recent creation dates (files less than a week old), or can I delete these files without regard to their dates? If these files are t

COPY statement and CHECK constraint violatons

I am trying to load data into my new database using the COPY statement and I am having constraint violation problems. One table has a column (updated_by) that stores the user_id of the user that saved/inserted the data, in effect the owner of that data. The user_id matches the login name of the user. This is used to prevent other users from modifying the data, only letting the original user update/delete the row. The table has a CHECK constraint, which checks that the current user is the one that owns the data in the row. To get around this constraint when loading the data via C

Location Intelligence where to from here?

Location Intelligence where to from here? Most people have heard of location intelligence tools such as Google Maps, or Geographic Information Systems (GIS). Indeed, mapping technology is used everywhere and can be accessed easily online, from a phone, and on the road. But can these applications be used successfully in a business information and reporting context? The short answer is yes. Although it is early days, the marriage between location and business intelligence software is being seen by many commentators as a highly productive long-term relationship, rather than just a temp
