I need to connect two Nortel OPTera 3400 or 3500 boxes, running OC-12 SONET
on their line side, through a provider's SDH network. The SDH network is
using AU4 Concatenated. What would be required to pipe the OC-12 SONET
through such a network?

The first step is easy, connect the OC-12 line side to
an STM-4 tributary port on the SDH NE.
But then it depends on the structure of the payload in
the OC-12 and the capabilities of the SDH NE if it will
work.
If the OC-12 contains an STS-12c SPE and the SDH NE supports
VC-4-4c there is no problem.
If the OC-12 contains 4 STS-3c SPE and the SDH NE supports
VC-4 there is no problem.
If the OC-12 contains STS-1 SPE and the SDH NE can remap
the STS-1 SPE (i.e. an AU3) into a TUG-3 there is no
problem.
In all other cases you have a problem.
Cheers, Huub.
