Password recovery problem with 3550 switch.

  • Follow

I have just been loaned a 3550 switch on which to practice my newly acquired
skills from a CCNA class I am enrolled in. I can't seem to reset or recover
the password.

I've followed the instructions at
http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/hw/switches/ps628/products_password_reco
very09186a0080094184.shtml about six or seven times.

Each time I get to step:

--
13. Change the password:
Switch#configure terminal
--

I receive the "Authorization failed" message. I assume I am doing something
wrong, but I can't figure it out. Anyone got any ideas?

Can I edit the config.text file directly? Can I delete the config.text and
have it rewritten from scratch when the switch boots?

Help please or I will have ANOTHER piece of networking equipment I'm not
smart enough to use!

Thanks,
SPN

During the recovery process, one is instructed to copy the config.text to
running-config. That is the step that must be ignored. The config file had
a password setup.

Thanks for giving me time to figure it out on my own.
