Sigh. If anyone needs me, I'll be tamping the powder in my musket.

Yup. They don't mention dipping that stuff in LN2 _at all_ -- so it must
be plain old ordinary crap whose crystalline structure isn't aligned in
an acoustically balanced fashion.
Tsk.

You deserve the best technology to get that pure sound out of the
vinyl.

i agree with the general sentiment expressed here (heck, i maybe we can
find someone who makes an excellent D/A converter using tubes acting as
the switches in an R-2R ladder, - you know, to get that "warm tube
sound") *but* we *still* have not mastered something that has appeared
sorta organically previously. to wit:
http://www.mesaboogie.com/manuals/Blue%20Angel.pdf
http://www.freeinfosociety.com/electronics/schemview.php?id=506
we *still* have not arrived at fully modeling the mathematics going on
inside a gem like this.
so, combine that Mesa Boogie with, say, something i once in my life
worked on designing algs:
http://aliens-project.de/blog/wp-content/uploads/2010/07/Eventide-DSP4000.jpg
and you have something that is sorta-kinda the same thing, D/A output
goes into vacuum tube circuitry to get a wunnerful sound. some muskets
work pretty good.
but i agree that this Samsung thing is fluff.

I loved buying the old Mobile Fidelity Sound Labs half-speed masters and
playing them on my Yamaha YP-D70 turntable with a Shure V15-III
cartridge and an antistatic mat and Zero ion gun, but I have to admit
CDs are the bomb!

Oops. When the 12AX7 tube that I own has done its job, my analog signal
usually looks like Samsung's -digital- signal...

The description of the volume control's function is a gem! Where does
"Dual Rectifier" fit in? It reminds me of the time someone brought me an
amp he garbage picked that had some broken tubes: Could I repair it? I
had a pair of KT-66 output tubes, but I didn't have 5V4 rectifier, so I
soldered a pair of 1-amp silicon diodes from the junk box to the right
pins of the broken tube's octal socket, and the thing worked fine. The
dumb cluck was sure that the diodes ruined "that tube sound", so I
swapped it with the rectifier in my old Williamson in the attic. He
swore it made a difference.

What does V1b do? I see the dual rectifier. Silicon! Horrors!

Neat photo, but they might have cleaned off the remains of the label
before taking it. :-(

Pretty neat. But no schematic diagram?

Hmm. Not that I completely understand the "tube sound" but a soft
power supply might make some difference. A resistor in series
with the diode might also work.

Oops. Ignore the above comment.
> What does V1b do? I see the dual rectifier. Silicon! Horrors!
Following my comment on a previous post, someone should build
a device with a DAC, vacuum tube, ADC, so one could add "tube sound"
to a digitized signal. I don't know that the DAC and ADC need to
be tubes, as long as there is one in the signal path.

I'll get right on it. Keep your eyes out for the AD12AX7, coming soon. Made in the latest "tube-on-chip" process coming out of intel.
Do carbon nano-tubes qualify as tubes in the audiophile world?

oh dear...
when speaking for your company, you shouldn't be tipping off the
competition or the market with a pre-release disclosure, should you, Bob?
