Using fonts in gvim help

I am trying to use a Windows font in gvim. My .gvimrc contains the single
line

se guifontset=-windows-fixedsys-medium-r-normal-*-*-120-*-*-c-*-microsoft-cp1252

This works and uses the font, but it also gives me lots of errors like this:

E234: Unknown fontset: -windows-fixedsys-medium-r-normal-*-*-120-*-*-c-*-microsoft-cp1252The font "-windows-fixedsys-medium-r-normal-*-*-120-*-*-c-*-microsoft-cp1252" does not support all the required character sets for the current locale "LC_CTYPE=en_US;LC_NUMERIC=en_US;LC_TIME=en_US;LC_COLLATE=C;LC_MONETARY=en_US;LC_MESSAGES=en_US;LC_PAPER=en_US;LC_NAME=en_US;LC_ADDRESS=en_US;LC_TELEPHONE=en_US;LC_MEASUREMENT=en_US;LC_IDENTIFICATION=en_US"
  (Missing character set "ISO8859-1")
  (Missing character set "ISO8859-1")

How do I get rid of this error? It looks like I either need to change the
locale to something that includes only character sets that are in this
font, or else I need to change the font to pretend that it is ISO8859-1 even
though it might not really be. However, I don't know how to do either of these
things. How do I fix this error?
