  • Follow

Hi

Can anybody out there help please?

I really need to get a free copy of the font Akzidenz as soon as
possible.

A free download would be preferable! Or could anybody email it to me at
paul@thewebbureau.com

Thanks in advance!
Paul

Comp.fonts is not a binary group, so there won't be any files posted here.
However, the following may help.

First, "Akzidenz" alone is not a complete font name. Several designs
include that word in their name. I assume, with all the risks that implies,
you are looking for the sans called "Akzidenz Grotesk." Though its first
appearance dates to 1896, the "genuine article" is still sold as a
commercial digital font by Berthold. The design is also known as Linotype
"Standard Commercial." Certain "AG" fonts also derive from this model, but
may vary somewhat.

Like many historic designs, there are several inexpensive lookalikes. Here
are a few of those which you may already own or be able to buy quite
inexpensively in bundles, even included with an older version of software on
eBay or the like:

Bitstream or Corel "Gothic 725-2" (bundled with many Corel products, like
Draw or WordPerfect).
Agfa "Anzeigen Grotesk" (bundled with Print Artist)
SoftKey KeyFonts "Express" (no longer sold new, sometimes offered used on
auction sites)

There are boatloads of neutral sans fonts which could substitute for
"Akzidenz Grotesk" in most layout projects, even Arial which comes with
Windows, but the three above will come closest to replicating it with a more
historical likeness.

If you need but cannot afford an original, then searching for an old Corel
collection or Googling the Web on the alternative names given in quotes
above should lead you to an inexpensive solution, if not a free one.
