Does anyone have a list of links for websites to learn about fonts? I found
will-harris.com, and that one is great, but I'd like to learn more.
I'm not so much interested in lists of fonts to use for this or that, but
more about how type is designed, and what aspects of various fonts make
them better for certain uses.
What about books? Are there good books on the subject?

Thanks. I really like the paper on the MS site that talks about terms.

organize fonts in font menu What program can you organize Windows fonts by styles instead of in
alphabeticorder when accessing font from a program such as Photoshop
or Illustrator? I remember the old days in Mac that I can put
different fonts in different folders and they would be grouped
together (maybe with suitcase or just the OS). Is there something
similar on Windows? It's really time consuming when searching for a
font from a long list.
Thanks for any info!

Font Book I am running OS X 10.4.2 server and trying to utilize the nework font
feature within Font Book. I setup the shared library on the server and
the needed Fonts folder which is mounting to the client correctly under
/Network/Library/Fonts but within Font Book the Network is listed but
as "Off" and no matter what I do it will not enable. Any thoughts would
I figured this out, when creating a shared library in 10.4 server the
name of the share has to be Library with the correct permissions, you
can put it in a sub directory but need the Library name to mount

vector font and outline font Hi,
in Wikipedia (e.g. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Outline_font) vector
font and outline font are used as synonym.
Ok, outline fonts are vector fonts, but aren't there any vector fonts
that aren't outline fonts?

font to use in another font I have developed a font that I want to distribute and all of the

Gradual Learning, not Reinforcement Learning I think that the attempt to prove an a priori assumption about the
efficacy of 'reinforcement' in AI is not wise unless someone has
made the decision that he wants to spend his time researching
'reinforcement' in computational learning theories. By shifting to
a more generic concept, like my idea of 'gradual learning,' the AI
researcher can rid himself of the burden of a doxology of concept that
was not designed with his interests in mind.
I feel that people who insist on using reinforcement even when it does
not work for them are just creating a problem where one doe...
Font I am not that good with Photoshop yet, but would like to reproduce the

I have tried finding the font and came up empty. Any suggestions as to
what font is used or how to make a larger version of it in photoshop?
Try asking on alt.fonts or alt.binaries.fonts. Someone will recognise it.

It's Linotype's 'Herculanum' - the 'A' and 'R' are from an alternative
character set. Identification - and pricing - can be found here
OT: Learn C# like you learned Xbase Several people who read my paper on extending VO apps with C#
(http://www.elbe-data.se/en/Vulcan/) have indicated to me that they don't
have an easy way to learn C#. In general I'd agree that you just have to get
in there and do it, whether the language is C# or Vulcan.NET or any other.
Yesterday, however, I happened to download LINQPad (http://www.linqpad.net/)
to help me learn LINQ faster and realized it can also be used to write and
test C# code interactively. That's the way I learned dBase and also T-SQL
(using SQL Server Management Studio) so I thought I'd pa...

Oww, some heavy mangling here!

that they took the 'Bold Extended' version and condensed ...
Where to learn from ? I don't know if this question is appropriate here but I can't think of
any other place.
I am a C programmer and I want to learn what makes a real C programmer. I
have been programming for 3 years in C now and I did not even know that
there exists a command like "nm" to see the list of functions inside a
shard library ending with .a
Then there is an expertise to be developed when debugging the code
written by others containing thousands of files and 100 MB of code size.
I was told in an interview that knowing how to use GDB with .core files

What's a web font? The term seems to refer to a font that one can expect
on any client computer and, ideally, is well-hinted. MS distributed a
set of such fonts for a while and they're still...

This is equivalent to your scalefont example
/Helvetica-Narrow findfont [65 0 0 65 0 0] makefont setfont
This scales to the same height but only 11/13 as wide
/Helvetica-Narrow findfont [55 0 0 65 0 0] makefont setfont
