Hello All,
I am having trouble installing the new font on win98. In the Control =
Panel - Fonts, the File menu does not show the 'Intall new font' option. =
Thats strange, but it is so. And I am stuck.. hence this message.
And thanks to Character for reply to previous post about San Serif PS. =
That font, MS Sans Serif, is not installed at all, just copying and =
pasting in the fonts folder did not work as this is not a ttf font. I =
have to install it, and that is where i am stuck. Coz there is no Intall =
new font' option in File menu of Fonts folder.
Thank you for any help in advance.

It's not there at all, or is it there, but grayed out? If grayed out,
then, as I recall, there's a limit on the number of fonts that win98 can
use - maybe you've reached it? It's a bit dangerous, but if you can see
a font which you absolutely never use, you could try deleting it, and
see if the Install New Font un-grays.
If it's not there at all, then I suspect that something may be
wrong/different with your windows installation. If it's a corporate
machine, under the control of an IT department, then they MAY have
disabled this feature on local windows installations.
Finally, copy and pasting a new font to the fonts folder *shouldn't*
install it; but drag-and-drop should.

Dear Sachin,
Try the following to restore the missing Install New Fonts menu command in
the Fonts folder.
1. You can sometimes repair the Fonts menu with Microsoft's own TweakUI
utility, available on Microsoft's web site (at
http://www.microsoft.com/ntworkstation/downloads/powertoys/networking/nttweakui.asp).
Once TweakUI is installed, go to Repair, then Repair Font Folder.
Alternative repair methods are available that do not require downloading or
installation of new software.
1. Go to the MS-DOS Prompt (Start | Programs | MS-DOS Prompt) and switch to
the Windows folder by typing cd \windows. (Modify the name of the folder if
you have installed Windows in a folder other than c:\windows.)
2. Change the attribute of the Fonts folder by typing attrib fonts +s and
press the Enter key.
3. Shut down and restart Windows. The Install New Fonts... menu item should
be restored.
If the command for the Fonts folder is not restored, the Fontext.dll file
may be missing or damaged. To replace the Fontext.dll file, follow these
steps:
1. Restart Windows in MS-DOS mode.
2. Change to the Windows\System folder.
3. If the Fontext.dll file exists, rename it Fontext.old.
4. Extract a new copy of the Fontext.dll file from the original Windows
CD-ROM to the Windows\System folder. (For information about using the
Extract tool, see Article Q129605 in the Microsoft Knowledge Base.)
5. Restart Windows normally.
If the problem persists, the Desktop.ini file may be missing or damaged. To
replace the Desktop.ini file, follow these steps:
1. Restart Windows in MS-DOS mode.
2. Change to the Windows\Fonts folder.
3. If the Desktop.ini file exists, rename it Desktop.old.
4. Extract a new copy of the Desktop.ini from the original Windows CD-ROM to
the Windows\Fonts folder. (For information about using the Extract tool, see
Article Q129605 in the Microsoft Knowledge Base.)
5. Restart Windows normally.
For more information, see
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;133725
Hope this helps.
Best wishes,
Gene

Your simulation of a newsreader is broken!

Andreas,
Since none else has any problem with this message, maybe it's YOUR
simulation of a newsreader that's broken? :) Whether we like it or not
OE IS standard (even older versions).
As far as 'send' settings, yes, your recommendation is right - but will
be ignored because of the tone of your first sentence.
Neither OE nor Netscape nor Agent finds any errors.

Objection, your honour! A protocol-conforming client agent reports:
[Error: Formatting error: Non-hexadecimal character in QP encoding]
as it should. Inserting broken MIME formats is a well-known technique
for achieving security compromises in vulnerable software, and any
decent MIME client will report this problem, if only in self-defence.

That's not funny. Not even remotely.

There is a limit on the number of fonts Win9x systems can install without
error. Exceeding this number is one cause of problems one symptom of which
is that new fonts cannot be installed and fonts cannot be installed.
Various methods of repair are possible. The following is usually sufficient
Delete enough fonts to reduce the total installed number to less than 600,
if necessary. Be sure to back up the *.ttf files in case you want to use
some of them later.
Open a DOS window. Type each line in turn followed be enter-
cd c:\windows [substitute the name of the windows directory]
attrib -h ttfcache
del ttfcache
attrib +s fonts
exit
Now, exit and restart windows.
This usually fixes the problem
By the way, if the fonts are not TrueType, install Adobe Type Manager Lite
(a free download from adobe's web pages) and use that to install the fonts.

No, it's not Pine's fault. But Pine is not so error-tolerant as (most)
other newsreaders. With Pine you'll see more errors than with, say,
Mozilla.
Actually, this is a known issue:
<http://www.google.com/search?q=%22Non-hexadecimal+character+in+QP+encoding%22>
<http://www.google.com/groups?q=%22Non-hexadecimal+character+in+QP+encoding%22>
Best is to avoid Quoted-Printable (QP) in news.

Greetings.
Perhaps someone will find the following helpful:
PC Magazine has a free utility that allows you to view, search,
archive, and reinstall fonts. Its called FontView (or FontView2, since
its an improved rewrite), and you can read about it and get to it via
the following link http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,4149,9062,00.asp.
N.B. As I only run Win9x, I have no idea if it supports later
operating systems.
Good luck!
Cordially,
Richard Kanarek
Of course, I have no affiliation with PC Magazine.

Windows 98 in especially susceptible to font folder problems. Programs can
be the culprit or attempting to install non-font files will do it. But most
often the cause is too many fonts. Keep your installed fonts below 800 and
you'll be okay. Expect problems above 1000.
You know your font folder is corrupt when the "Install new font" feature is
no longer available. You will also see truncated (shortened) font names
instead of the real names.
I have created a free utility that performs the following functions for
Windows
98 users:
** Restores "Install New Font" option
** Restores "Open and Print" options
** Corrects the names of the fonts (no longer truncated)
** Fixes problems with fonts not showing up
Download "Font Folder Fixer" for free here:
http://www.letterheadfonts.com/downloads/utilities.shtml
Find out more about the corrupt font folder in this article:
