BW-TIFF and multi-page TIFF

  • Follow

Hi,

I have a bunch of TIFF files in black and white that I want to clean up
a bit before bundling them up as a single multi-page TIFF.

The first step of cleaning them up worked just fine but I was amazed to
find out that GIMP had saved those previously black and white files in
gray-scale adding quite a bit to the individual filesizes :-( The first
question is therefore how to make sure that GIMP stays in black and
white. Even indexing the file to 1-bit before saving it did not work.

I know I can bundle the files with 'convert' to make a multi-page TIFF
out of them and that is probably what I'll do. But I was still
wondering how I can open those with GIMP, it only shows the first page
apparently. This is my second question. I'd be grateful for any
advice.

Best regards

My advice is: use 'convert' with '-compression Group4'. It's the best
compression method for b/w material and GIMP can't save in this format.

Hi Marc,

thank you for your advice. I did not know about that particular
compression method.

That still leaves me wondering

 a) How do I open multi-page tiffs with GIMP (or any other Linux
    program)?
 b) How do I prevent GIMP from changing to grayscale?

I hope somebody can provide some insights here.

Best regards

Not (yet) possible with GIMP. You can use 'convert' to split a multipage
tiff into single pages.
