turning off "gimp core dumps" ?

On occassion, I still have very large... "core dumps" when
running Gimp...
this may not be the correct term... but it is peculiar to Gimp, and
produces
a file in my gimp root directory... usually a very large file... the
result of some
error... really... it almost always seems to happen when working with
very
big files, so it may be overload more than error.

Is if there is a way to turn off saving of these gimp core dump
files ?
Say, in Preferences or elsewhere ?

Core dump is the wrong term and it's not caused by an error but Gimp's
swap file(s). You can set the amount of RAM for image data in the
preferences (Environment → Tile cache size) and everything beyond that
size may be swapped out to disk. You can set the place where those files
are generated under `Folders → Swap folder`. Place the mouse over the
text entries of both options to get a tooltip with an explanation.
