Hello!!
I just got back on usenet, wondered if there was any life in this group. It
has a pulse?

Hi Bill
Looks like a very shallow beat if that. Nothing at all in alt.binaries.
In the 90's I learned LW 5.0 from these two groups - sad it's gone.
Last I looked, a few years ago, folks were going to the Newtek site. I
tried it but ...
It's like the newsgroup was a neighborhood pickup game and the Newtek site
is a league complete with umpires, refs, superstars, and fans.
Anyway, now that there is at least a few folks here maybe it'll be worth
stopping by to see if there are any good questions and answers.
You got 9.5 yet?

Yep, waiting for 9.6, should be here shortly. They've added some good stuff
in the 9 series, I really wanted some nice UV tools though. Now I need time
to learn it all, I'm a hobbyist so it seems everything else comes first.

Hey Gene,
I cranked up 9.5 the other day, and did a test render... the application
closed without error. Tried again the same thing.
I put a support case in the web form as other means of contacting Newtek
usually draw a blank.
I asked about the newsletter also, for some reason I don't get one.
I've been meaning to get back into learning lightwave, but have a severe
shortage of time. I have several good books, and have eleventy billion
video tutorials. I'm overwhelmed with the bulk of the application.
Regards Charles

Amen to that. This newsgroup taught me LW 3.5 in little Tasmania,
Australia in the early 90s. I'd switched over from Imagine 2.0 when
they finally detached Lightwave from the Toaster and I could work in
PAL.
Times move on I guess. I keep watching this group for sentimental
sakes I guess :-)

That's it probably for most.
I haven't upgraded from 8 and don't know if I'll ever get back into it as
deep as I used to be given the economy.

Sorry to hear that. You 32 or 64 bit? Win or Mac? I tried the trial and
say long render times for some old scenes but did not it shutdown.
Sure hope Newtek can survive the economy and Autodesk's appetite for all
things 3D.

I need to learn AutoCAD, but I'm just so used to LW that it's hard to get
motivated.
This group is automatically checked, along with 3 other groups, every half
hour.
If you ask a question, you still get an answer eventually.
Not dead yet.

Win32, 64 bit although very promising, is a tad iffy "still" :-O
Well if Autodesk have the money, a hostile takeover is always in the cards.

Not really. Newtek is a privately owned company not publicly listed, so
Autodesk can't just buy up a majority share-holding if th efancy takes
them. They would have to make the actual owners an 'offer they can't
refuse' to get hold of Newtek. Fortunately, I don't see that happening
anytime soon :-)
Cheers

I see that as a good thing. I see Lightwave as a very independent
product, I'd hate to see it get swallowed up by a large corporation.
