OT:HARDWARE: Audio equivalent to KVM switch

  • Follow

    OT: HARDWARE

Since I've got 3 cpu's under my desk and use a KVM, I'd also like to
either A) switch the audio along with the keyboard/mouse/monitor, or
PREFERABLY, B) be able to mix all three audio's together to come out the
same set of speakers.

BUT, of course, I don't really want to spend the buck$ for a full
blown audio mixer. Suggestions? Thanks!

Check out BH in New York. They sell a bunch of that sorts of things that
are used.
You can get a real good price on things.
Cuz really, you "do" want a full blown mixer :)

Hey Eric, I 'll agree with Mark here, you do need a "full blown" audio
mixer... But the key here is that it doesn't have to be a *really* full
blown one, you can get basic-functionality, 4-in / 1-out audio mixer
consoles really cheap. I mean the ones without fancy balancing or
processing, just basic in/out switching with level sliders. Do a simple
search, and you may be surprised. And such a thing will surely come in handy
for other similar uses too, it can't hurt having one.

And if ya wanna go the switching route there's plenty like this:

It may depend on the soundcards you have, but I put my tape deck line out
into my soundcards line in, and now I can play tapes through my computer (as
long as it's on).

This tells me that the inexpensive solution is to daisy chain line outs to
line ins so that the final soundcard is carrying the audio signals of all
the preceding ones. It'll be like balancing on a beach ball to set your
audio levels, but it should work with nothing more than a few cheap cables.

Hehehe... Ya, that's just the default size of my smallest digicam.

Just be happy I didn't have the 11megapixel DC in hand :P

unfortunately this doesnt allow you to "switch" audio sources, but rather listen to all of them at
once, all the time. If thats what youre looking for though, its a good solution.
