What the hell does "Save Layers as Object..." do?

  • Follow

OK, I have an object that has many layers. I want to save each layer
as a seperate object. I thought that's what "Save Layers as Object"
would do. Maybe it does, and I haven't a clue. Off to read the F'ing
manual, but if this isn't it, how do you do this?

ok, I get it... read the manual...

I know there must be a way to save all layers at once as seperate
objects...

Mike,

Well, I found a plugin on Flay that will save a particular layer to a file,
but not all at once -- how would you name the objects?

Anyway, it's called "Copy Plus/Cut Plus/Paste Plus/Save Layer to Object
Plus" (long name ;-) here's the link:

	from the PDF:

Save Layers As Object Use this to save a foreground layer to its own
object fi le. If multiple layers
are selected, they will be saved in a single layer. Make sure you add
the .lwo fi lename extension
to your object name when saving.

IOW, this ain't the droid yer lookin' for.

Thanks Jim,

If a plugin saved individual layers all at once, they could be
named namexxx_000.lwo, namexxx_001.lwo, etc. I wouldn't care what
they're named....

Thanks for the link!

Tried it... it does 5 layers then closes Modeler... not written for
8.3 perhaps...? Otherwise, it is exactly what I'm looking for... (it
named everything as I said; test (filename) becomes test_1.lwo,
test_2.lwo, etc.

Too bad...

Works for me in 8.3. Something special in layer 5 or 6?

Try the new version with the included test object please:
http://lightwavers.com/files/lscripts/savelayersasobjects_103.zip

New:
- zero padding in filenames
- fixed filename numbers to match real layer number (sorting order 1, 20, 2, ..)

Tried the new version and it works lickety-split! Thank you very much!
Must have been somehting stupid with my model that it didn't work
before. Just saved me a whole lot of mouse clicks!

You might want to post this as a seperate link...

Thanks again!
