Help: Converting PageMaker 7 to InDesign
I received some files created on PM7 on a Mac. I don't have that program
but do have InDesign CS2 (on a Mac).
InDesign does not recognise the files and I think it is because the
PageMaker files do not have an extension.
Could someone tell me what the extension is, please.
Or, if I am wrong, does anyone have any suggestions to converting from

Do not double-click the files, instead open up InDesign and then use
the Open command from the file menu.
If it still won't let you open the PageMaker documents, rename them in
the Finder to have the filename extension ".PMD", then try again.
InDesign should convert the documents, but they will almost certainly
need tweaking. The most common problem is that InDesign seems to have
different line-spacing to PageMaker, meaning text boxes are often
overflowing - you will need to either change the line-spacing or
stretch each text box vertically.

You shouldn't need the extension, even in Windows. But as already
mentioned you should use file>open to get those files opened.
You say ID doesn't recognize the files. What does that mean? If it means
that it doesn't see the files from a file>open command, just change the
view of the files to all files and ID will see all the files in the
selected folder.
Select the PM file and it should open.
Don't expect miracles here. You'll have everything you need to work with
but ID handles text much differently than PM so you're going to be
looking at a good deal of tweaking. Text wrap is also handled
differently so watch out for that, too.
For graphics, make sure that everything in the PM file is linked. ID
won't convert embedded graphics. You'll only get low res proxy images
with missing links.

Thanks very much, you've been very helpful and I have managed to convert
to InDesign based on your info.
Sorry I am late in responding. Things went crazy at work and I've been
working most nights and have only had the chance to get back to this.
All the best,
Bongani
