A Little Help - Transparent Background

  • Follow

I am using Paint Shop Pro 6 on a machine with Win98 SE. Have got a couple
of XP machines but use this one for mail.

I have some patches and logos that I have loaded onto my machine (will be
making stationary - watermarks)

I have got two books on Paint Shop Pro and while they talk about
transparency I cannot find direction on how to do it.

I am in the process of learning Paint Shop but I would like some help with
this as I would like to get it done.

Logos or pictures will be in color. They will be jpg, tif or gif. If
someone would give me some specific directions as to how to make the area
around the logo (I take it that is the background) transparent I would
appreciate it.

After I set the background color, will be making the picture opaque (for the
purposes of watermarking) so that must be a consideration in all this.

Thanks in Advance

I started with PSP 7 But I hope this will work for you.
Firstly when you drag or open an image in psp it will have what is called a
background layer look in the layers pallet to see this. Right click that
layer and from the context menu pick the promote background layer. This will
turn it into a regular layer that can support transparency. I you are
creating an image from new start with a transparent layer, and unless you
flood the entire layer with colour the are around which you are working will
stay transparent.
Back to the imported image. Now its on a regular layer you can erase the
unwanted background using erase or you can select with freehand selection
tools such as point to point, the part of the image you want to keep then
inverse the selection (which makes the unwanted bit selected and hit delete
to remove it, followed by selections none .

Now only jpeg can not have transparency and gif can have only 256 colours
which is ok for a logo, and 1 and only 1 of those colours can be designated
as the colour not to display/paint that being the background colour makes it
appear to have transparency. PSP 's native format can have transparency and
if your going to create your logo in psp then add it to an image as a
watermark inside psp then that would be the best format to use and save the
logo in.

I appreciate the comeback; however, I think that you have the idea that I am
relatively familiar with PSP.

These logos that I am speaking of are pictures (gif jpg, tif, etc) that I
have downloaded from the net.

I am not creating or drawing anything.

On creating the water mark. I am making the picture very opaque, saving it,
and using watermark in word or stationary in OE and that creates what I
need.

I cannot find the "layer palette" and I am probably looking in all the wrong
places.

On the main tool bar, "layers" gets me no place; however at the bottom of
the drop down that appears it does have a check mark next to "Layer 1 -
Background" (significance of that is unknown).

On main toolbar "layer", view brings up "tool bars" at the bottom of the
drop down. Select that and another drop down appears that gives me an
option to "select tool bars". Select "layer palette" and "Layer Palette -
Background" opens.

I cannot find anything that states "Promote Background Layer"

I have no idea how to get to any of the functions which you write of and the
help menu is great if you are going to cook meat.

I can make a JPEG opaque and save it in what ever format PSP allows. From
there I guess that I can reload it and work on the background. An actually,
using the multi-step approach would be good for me. Once I am able to
accomplish some - even using an extra long method then I can learn the short
cut/fast way.

As I mentioned before I know very little about PSP. A clam probably has
better knowledge. The two books that I have do explain a lot, just nothing
about how to get to the tool bars for the functions that want you to use.

Again, thanks for the help, but if you can put it in a little more detailed
directions I would appreciate it.

Was in a computer store and came across a lady who was about 80 yrs old.
She stated that PSP was the greatest thing for handling her grandchildren's
pictures. I just kept my mouth shut.

Me thinks word can use an image as a watermark and adjust saturation to give
pastel effect and fade the image also. OE is another mater.

Press L on the Keyboard to toggle on and again to toggle off
Another important key stroke I O that's Oh not zero this opens the tool
options that you will need to adjust brush size ect.
These palates can display just the title bar but when hovered over open to
display contents A little arrow head next to the X for exit will lock them
open or activate the roll up

That's indecating which layer you are curently on, the layer will also be
higelited in the layers pallet.

Ah you just reminded me wher the icons are that open the pallets on the
standerd tool bar below the menu bar. You have discoverd how to select which
pallets and tool bars you want open at start up.

Ok most folk add a new raster layer, Top item in layers menu.
Using the flood tool, like a bucket on the tools menu that by default runs
vertically on the left.
Now you need to open the Colour pallet if its not open. under the rainbow
you should see two boxes called styles. These are the left mouse button and
the lower the right mouse button styles. the tricky bit is the arrow head if
you click that and exactly that a fly out appears. On this are 4 icons the
first a brush for plain colour the second is a gradient where one colour
fades into another and 3rd is a pattern where you select to paint with a
pattern the last is null nothing zilch, ok no entry.
After all that you need the first one selected now click the colour if its
not white If it is leave it as that if it was not a new box just opened
where you can pick the colour you want then click ok.
Now back on the image give the title bar of the image a quick click to make
sure its active. and left click in that new raster layer and the image turns
white, Well only the top layer. now over on the layers pallet. You will see
a dark bar with 100 writen in it, to the right of that bar and before the
next one that says normal. You will find a half a hour glass grab this with
your mouse and slide to the left. As you do so the opacity of the white
layer is reduced at around 50 or a bit less you will have a faded image that
you can use as a background image in a document. This can be saved as a Jpeg
for those programs that need it that way OE for instance Though word can
just use copy merged from PSP and paste in word.

I hope that's enough to get you started.
