convert .doc to jpg at 300dpi

  • Follow

Hi,

I have a frustrating problem. I have created a document using WordArt
(I have Word 97) and some free fonts I found on the net. Some of
these fonts were true type others not. I now want to convert this
file to a jpg without losing quality. Someone told me to create a new
page in PSP at 300dpi and copy and paste the word document into that.
However the document is 10 times smaller when I do this. WHY???

This has been bothering me for me and I am at my wits end. Can
anybody please advise a way of converting this WordArt document into a
jpg without losing quality or size???

Many thanks in advance,
Leila

Just skip the 300 DPI BS and print the document to "Fit To Page".

It's size is it's size. Bring the picture up on your copy of Word and size it how you want it to be. Then do a Screen
Capture. Look in the PSP help files if you don't know how to screen capture.

97? That was like 1776 in computer time. You don't mention which version of PSP.

I still use Word 97 and it's just fine. I have noticed that several
universities that accept papers online use Word 97 as a standard. Microsoft
has not added or changed much over the years; it's a word processor.

I beg to differ. Not that I mind anyone using Word 97. I was just commenting after all. I don't know one Office 2003
user that you could get to go back to Word 97. And I know many. As such this current problem with the size of the
WordArt in Word 97 is one such example.

That's like saying, my VW is just fine. Who needs a Lexus? Both will go from point A to point B but I'd rather take
the Lexus across country 3000 miles than the VW. Of course when I was younger I would rather take the VW.

Now that I think of it I wish had that old VW to play around with on weekends. That was a fun car!

Yep, that's what killed Corel's WordPerfect.

:-)

Word 97 was the last version of Word to be offered in both DOS and Windows.

Let me begin by explaining raster vs. vector:

Raster = Pixel-based image. Pixels are tiny squares of one color each.
Vector = line- and curve-based image.

Raster can be "resampled" larger or smaller with various methods, but in
general making enlargements kills the image quality because you are just
enlarging a bunch of squares. The negative effect is called "pixelation."

Vector can be resized larger or smaller, again and again, without ANY loss
in quality. That's because vector graphics are defined by underlying math,
which remains attached to the graphic representation you see.

When you're working on Paint Shop Pro, which can have both raster and
vector layers, vectors are "temporarily" rendered to the document at the
document's resolution... So, if you have a 100-pixel by 100-pixel vector
drawing and print it to an 8" x 8" page, it's going to look all pixelated,
but if you resize the same drawing to fill a 2400-pixel by 2400-pixel and
THEN print, it will look smooth. The first case would be 12.5 dots per inch
(basically the same as pixels per inch), the second case would be 300 DPI.

However, in Microsoft Word all your text and WordArt objects are vector
objects, and are actively re-rendered at higher resolutions based on how
you're viewing them. So, when you zoom in on some text, it still looks
smooth, because it's being re-rendered instantly. But when you copy and
paste these things into PSP, they have to be converted from vector into
raster... so PSP will give you a pop-up box, asking you to enter the
resolution to use for the conversion. You can keep the resolution the same
as it is in Word, or enter a higher resolution if you're making a
print-quality image.

So, before you make your JPG, you need to answer the question: Is this JPG
for viewing ON SCREEN, or is it for PRINTING OUT? If it's for the screen,
you can go with a small size just as it appears in Word. If you intend to
save that image and print copies of it, you need to save it at a much
higher resolution, and also DON'T USE JPG... use PNG or TIFF (be sure to
Zip the TIFF to get a much smaller file). JPG _always_ loses quality
because of the way it compresses the image.

Anyway, here's my tutorial for doing what you want.

--FOR SCREEN- and WEB-READY JPG--

1. In Word, arrange all your stuff on the page, then press Ctrl-A (select
   all). Then press Ctrl-C (copy).
2. Go into PSP and press Ctrl-V (paste as new image). You'll get a window
that says Meta Picture Import and shows "Original Size" and "Import
   Size".
3. Enter the Import Size numbers exactly as they appear for the Original
   Size, then click OK.
4. Now you've got a raster image at screen resolution... save a
high-quality backup as a PSP or PSPIMAGE file, then use File > Export >
JPEG Optimizer to save your output.

--FOR PRINT-QUALITY LOSSLESS--

1. Same as above.
2. Same as above.
3. Now leave the box open and switch back to Word. Looking at your page,
what is the width in inches from the left margin to the right margin
(meaning the grayed areas on the ruler)? Multiply that number by 300 and
   switch back to PSP.
4. Make sure "Maintain original aspect ratio" is checked and enter your
number for Import Size: Width in pixels. Height will change
   automatically, so click OK.
5. Save the file as Portable Network Graphics (PNG) or Tagged Image File
Format (TIFF). If you use TIFF, set the options to Uncompressed and zip
the file afterwards. PNG won't benefit from zipping, but you can try
running the Optimizer and reducing the colors to cut down the filesize
(note that doing so will make the image look worse if it's very colorful
or photographic). Either way, the file is going to be at least several
   megabytes.
6. When you try to print copies of the image, you should set the print
options for whatever application is doing the printing to 300 DPI and no
resizing (100%)--don't use "fit to page" or anything.

What's the problem? When you paste it into PSP from Word 97 it's handled
like a meta vector file and you can specify what resolution you want to
rasterize at. Are you saying that pasted text from 2003 appears in PSP as
an intact vector object?

Well, then, I've got a copy of Word 97 you can have for any weekend prose

Sceadu,

Many thanks for your explanations! I didn't realise that there was so
much to take into consideration when transferring images from one
package to another.

First things first: I am using PSP 6.

Second, I want to PRINT out the images and keep the quality looking as
I see it on screen - SMOOTH.

The reason I want to do this is simple. I want to create a number of
transfers/decals for some corgi models that I am restoring. I have
measured the size of the transfers I want to create, and used MS
Word's ruler to create WordArt images in exactly the same size. The
reason I used WordArt is because it allows you to import nonstandard
fonts and create some nice curved word shapes which I want to use for
the decals. BTW: I have looked into doing this in PS and PSP and it
just seems quite alot more complicated, not to mention the fact that I
am a complete novice at graphics and I understand you cannot create
the images I want using the non standard fonts.

So, I have created this word document, however I do not have a good
enough printer at home to print the the document.

Someone said I should save the document as a jpg so i could copy it
onto a cd and take it to work to print.

This is where the problem starts. I have tried just copying and
pasting the document into PSP. A box pops up at first asking what
size and resolution and I inserted the size of an A4 page (21x29.5)
and 300dpi. Apart from the images rendering ALOT smaller than my
specification, it still comes out looking blocky. I will try your
suggestions and get back to you.

Hope it works!

This is exactly where you should be . . .

Again . . .
1. select the Word Art image in Word
2. Paste as New Image in PSP
3. When the Window pops up - where it says width . . . try changing that
number to 600 (just as an example) then click OK . . .
that's it.

If all you want is the text in word save it as a word doc take it to Work
and print it.
Making a jpeg of text tends to make it messy.

You can do curved text from psp if you use text on a path

I've got a friend who has the same bug in his copy of Word.

There's a group of us who pass a particular Word file between us by
email making updates to it. When this one particular guy edits it the
file size increases by a factor of nearly 10. Once it's become large it
stays that size when other people edit it. I save it in another file
format then load it back into Word to shrink it back down.

Like Trev says, the easiest way to do what you want is to save the Word
..doc file to disc, take _it_ to work, and print it there with Word. If you
don't have Word at work, there is a free viewer application from Microsoft
you can take to work that will let you print it out:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=95e24c87-8732-48d5-8689-ab826e7b8fdf&DisplayLang=en

It will view and print any Word file, but it won't let you make changes.

You'll have to ask permission from your IT person to install this, but I'm
sure (s)he will help you, but you probably have Word at your office already
anyway.

It is you who started the thread with the problem: convert .doc to jpg at 300 dpi.
I don't have any problems moving images to or from Word 2000, 2003. I was simply offering a suggestion as to how you
could get your image at a screen size you choose.

DPI only affects printing BTW. You most likely need to create a lower dpi image to get it to 'appear larger' on your
screen when pasting it into PSP.

ROTFL. Sally you got me with that one. Of course it will have to be in a VW on a laptop :) Two eras in one - early
70's and mid 90's! Word 97 was actually written in 95-96'.

Oh, no, here we go again!!! It depends on the application, Carl!

Yes indeed you didn't. Sorry. I didn't start it either. And I think they have been put on the right track by one of
your last postings. Nice explanation also.

Thanks for the advice. Certainly saving the word document to disc and
printing it from work sounds ideal. As you might expect I have
already tried this however I have run into problems here too. Because
I am using nonstandard fonts, the formatting is not saved in the file
(regardless of whether I set Word to save True Type fonts or not). So
when I try printing from another machine, because it does not have the
specific fonts installed, it just prints out any old "match". This is
the reason I need to convert to an image before printing from another
machine.

A copy of the fonts along with the document might help You dont have to
install to use them but you may have to have them open before you open the
document.
