I am having a problem with PSP 9.01 all of a sudden out of the blue.
Every time I click the 'A' button to use a font, PSP instantly freezes
up and I have to CAD to get out of it. Then I get the popup that
windows has encountered and error, prg will be shut down, yada, yada.
No other aspect of PSP is giving me a problem, just the font selection
button.
I've emptied all the cache files, done a repair from my original disk,
cleaned out everything, and have no virus problems. I've not installed
or uninstalled any new programs or filters, no Microsoft updates,
nothing...........
The only thing I did was use a ding font supplied by a group for a
challenge, and I didn't install it in Windows, I just put it in a
folder with other dings. I thought that might be the problem, so I
deleted that ding font, but it was clean for virus and no other group
members are having the same problem that I'm having now.
Short of totally uninstalling and reinstalling, is there anything else
to do? Anyone have an idea of what could have happened?
Thanks so much,
sapat

You are right suspect the new font. TrueType fonts are not images,
but directions for drawing the glyphs. An error in those directions
is like an error in a program. PSP interprets this program and is
notoriously fragile while doing so. The bad font rarely evokes an
error message as it should, but causes PSP to crash.
What to do? Try these: Restart Windows and double check that a copy
of the font is not present in the Fonts folder. Make sure that it is
not open either, which would also cause PSP to use it in the Text
tool.
I do not think that PSP caches fonts, but it cannot hurt to try File
> Preferences > Reset Preferences and check "Delete all cache
files."

Hi group --
Fred - I never installed it in Windows, so I just had deleted it from a
font folder I keep for that type of thing. Thank you for the
information on ding fonts. I didn't realize there was a process for
dings that differed from fonts. That's good to know. And PSP font
fragility.....yes, I am not so fondly acquainted with that experience
;(
Tommie - I tried the 'repair' and it didn't correct the problem.
lafnsu - I've used The Font Thing for years and have all my fonts in a
generic font folder on my hard drive and they are all subdivided into
smaller categories according to style (anal, yes, but I learned from
experience a long time ago).
Susie - No, I hadn't added or done anything at all. I did delete the
ding font, but never installed it since I use Font Thing and only put
it in a Halloween Fonts/Halloween Dings folder. I never install any
fonts into my Windows directory that I use for graphics. I only keep
in Windows what is needed to run the system and what the various prg
who do install their own put there.
Sig - Thanks for the tip about the Zap program, which I did download
and use. Great little utility.
So, what I ended up doing today was uninstalling, cleaning all the
registry files and other stuff with Zap, reinstalling from my CD and
reinstalled the update/patch to 9.01. It seems fine now, and I'm back
to being able to utilize the font selection button without PSP freezing
up. XX fingers crossed XX
Thank you to everyone who offered help on this problem. I appreciate
seeing a lot of the old names here I remember from the past in the Jasc
Beta Newsgroup as I was a member over there since PSP 8 was just
starting beta testing. Since I don't support Corel or their products,
it's especially nice to see folks here from 'the old days'. PSP 9 is
as far as I go, so I need to take care of my baby!!
Regards,
