Guys I can't really wrap my brain around this one. I've always seen
the torn page effect on the screenshot images at Rocket Download. I
went over today to take a look again and this time took note that each
graphic has a different torn edge effect, here are some examples:
http://www.rocketdownload.com/details/grap/6143shot.htm
http://www.rocketdownload.com/details/inte/6587shot.htm
http://www.rocketdownload.com/details/home/5357shot.htm
http://www.rocketdownload.com/details/musi/4190shot.htm
My problem is this, if I have to manually do the effect for each
screenshot I need, that's no good. Yet if I have to have
different-shaped masks, well that doesn't seem effective either.
Is there an efficient way to do a different torn effect each time?
Perhaps there's some possible technique I'm not aware of (?). It's a
topic that doesn't have much in the way of tutorials I found today. I
thought for sure there'd be a ton but many links were broken and of
the ones I did manage to find, most needed a filter (Xenofex and Paint
Engine, for example).
Any tips would be appreciated. :oD

Try using the Noise mode of the Warp Brush in PSP 8. For any
PSP brush you can click on the image, move the brush to some
other point, hold Shift and click again. The brush will draw
a straight stroke between the two click points. However, since
you're dealing with a noise warp, an edge along which you
draw the stroke will be irregular. Each stroke will look
different in detail and you can use the Noise control to
modify the look from smooth to ragged variations. Add a drop
shadow and you have your torn edge.

Yes, I'd seen Gary's method...also pretty slick. But Kris' use
of the Warp brush was something I would never have thought about.

Especially mind your HARDNESS brush settings whenever you seek
more of an actual torn look. The harder that brush, the more
tear-like your warp. Softer edge brushes will produce a more
ripple-like wavy effect. Other settings can also impact the
view of your edge warp. However, the primary players there will
always be your Noise and Hardness Guys. Well, and of course
that Size Guy too. Sorry, size duz matter.
Another favorite of mine for tearing actual photos: Randomly
run the Smart Edge tool in a zig zagging fashion around that
image. The irregular additional jags and tiny zigs introduced
by your Smart Edge (having his problem making up his mind whut
is whut there), can be quite useful for edge tears, producing
some nice little detailing with not much work. (Okay, with no
work, a much preferred M.O. for this desk. :)

I had no luck with this at all. Nothing happened to the images on the
screen (I tried several when I didn't get any results).
So I'm guessing it's like one of the text effects I recvd instructions
here about a couple of weeks back; there was also an RGB settings or
something to take into consideration that wasn't mentioned. Once I
stumbled onto that, the text effect technique described worked
perfectly!
However, computer got too buggy and was crashing so last night had to
do a completel wipe. And after playing around for 2 solid hours, with
a 2nd call, finally got a good techie from my ISP to help me with my
cabel internet. So I'm off to start the whole process of reinstalling
everything. (This time around I _am_ definitely going to learn how to
do an image of a basic installation. I wasn't ready before.) So, it
may be a day or two before I can come back to this issue. <sigh> Not
looking forward to this.
Cheers all and thanks a million! Once I'm up and running and have
tried this out again, will report back.

Ahh....another pretty nifty method. Thanks Porter, would never
have tried that one either, but it works very nicely, too.

Go into the Alt.Binaries.Paint-Shop-Pro newsgroup and pick up real torn
paper edges, done with real torn paper.

Darn. My new ISP doesn't carry that one. I used to visit there all

Before using the brush, add a white border to your image
using Image > Add Borders. Then switch to the Warp Brush.
Selection noise mode. Set a big brush - maybe 50% of the
smaller dimension of the image. Set the Hardness to 100.
Set the Strength to 100. Set the Noise control all the way
up. Set the Edge Mode to Fixed. Move the brush slowly along
the edge where the image meets the white border. You should
see the edge of the image turn into a wiggly line. Once you
get a clear effect you'll probably want to back off on some
of the settings. Later you can put your image on a layer
instead, increase the canvas size and, using the Background
Edge Mode, you can make a wiggly edge against transparency.
Adding a Drop Shadow to this result is easy and then you
can put a layer below against which you can merge the effect.

Thanks, Kris! As soon as I re-install PSP, will try this out.
