Using a gradient as a mask?

I want to fade away the bottom part of an image into the background. I
assume I would use a gradient as a mask? I'm a bit confused on the
steps needed. Help please?

I know one method.

Make the pic a gif file.

Then Select the whole picture (as one layer)

Then Selections>Modify>Feather-Inside Out (gives degrees of feathering
in from the edge. (only thing here, is that it feathers all 4 sides.

but it will feather the bottom, maybe a few mo cut and pastes, or cut
and paste with a feathered selection tool, could help target the bottom
only.

Help > Learning Center > Photo > Using Mask Layers - Basic. This
tutorial has you paint on the mask with black where you want to hide
the masked layer and white where you want to show it. Try that, then
replace the Paint Brush tool with the Flood Fill tool and the
Materials Properties set to a black-white gradient.

Help > Index > Gradients has good information on finding or making
the gradient.

Go to layers > new mask layer > show all. You now have a mask on top of the
image but you can still see the image. if you hover the cursor over the mask
layer in the layers pallet you will see its white. This gives us a clue that
where the mask is white you can see the image so where its black the image
disappears or the under laying layer shows thought so fill with a white (at
the top ) to black gradient and the and lo and behold the bottom has faded
away. You can make adjustments as needed then select the mask layer and hit
delete it will ask if you would like it merged say yes an your done

Cool! I tried your steps, this was the first mask I ever successfully
worked with.
