importing .ai to 3ds max...

hello.
first, pardon me for my english as it is not my first language:)

what i'm trying to do is to import this vector file:

into 3ds max 6,

I've made it using Illustrator, but when I import it into max all I get are
the outlines of the drawing,
the black surfaces disappear.

I learned that this is how 3dmax understands .ai files - as set of
splines - no surfaces.
What can i do to import the picture exactly the way it is? I want to animate
it using bones, IK and so on.
Maybe import it using different vector format?

Another thing:
what i wan't from life:) is to create a fine 2D animation using a fine
animation software. I've checked many programs but none of them cut the
mustard:
moho - terrible flash export, looks really bad
koolmoves - too damn primitive
toonboom - great, but can't create bones in it, which is essential for me

so that's why i picked 3dsmax, even though it's a 3d software i can easily
use it for 2D purposes (final output of the animation will be of flash
format - don't worry i've figured out how to do that:) but now that i came
across the problem i've explained above i'm not sure if i want to continue
using it....

what other fine - 2D vector animation software - is out there?
what i expect it to do is to have good navigation (!!!!) , ability to import
..ai
files without any problem, IK + bones, export to vector formats (flash
preferably)..... is there such software out there?

thanks in advance
Rob

ps. I hate writing in english, damn:) sound so stiff, jokes come out lame as
hell,
to make it up for ya check this little somethin' i did while ago:
