Apache Start Error: [error] make_sock: unable to listen for connection on port 80
Hi,
I just installed apache on my machine (Win XP).
However when I start apache, it just starts and then exits with the
following error in the error log.
[error] make_sock: unable to listen for connection on port 80
I have done a netstat -a and find that no other service is
running/listening to port 80 (for eg IIS) that might be causing this.
I have changed the port to 3213 instead of 80, in this case the error
is
[error] make_sock: unable to listen for connection on port 3213
If I try to start apache as a service it just starts and then exits
again.
I have disabled the windows firewall and tried too. Does'nt help. I
even tried the 'rebooting' trick but in vain.
I installed mysql on the same day, and that seems to be working fine.
Any ideas what could be wrong with apache.
Thanks again.
Regards,
Pai

Cracked it finally.
I am a linux guy and was just moving to windows to be able to develop
on windows.
The problem was as follows:
There are 2 firewalls on my m/c (Windows XP). The default windows one
and a mcafee one.
These by default dont allow any of the services, unless some changes
are made to their settings. Apache.exe showed up as blocked in the
firewall settings. Had to change the setting to allow full access.
Also opening some ports 80 (or what ever port u need) helps too.
Cheers guys,

Thanks for the follow-up. It's good of you to share the benefit of your
experience - hopefully it will help somebody troubleshoot similar
problems in the future.
