IS THIS THE CORRECT FORUM? Hope so. We have three computer networked at home...all with Windows XP. one of those is a laptop. Some mornings all 3 can see each other and transfer files...then mysteriously one or more will disappear. No contact....then later it's back. The laptop is the worst. Most often it won't let us in...but sometimes it will. No obvious reason. The most INFURIATING part is the message "see your administrator". Obviously she had been that way before, for she dodged the boggy bits as though by habit. Winston followed, still clasping his bunch of flowers. His first feeling was relief, but as he watched the strong slender body moving in front of him, with the scarlet sash that was just tight enough to bring out the curve of her hips, the sense of his own inferiority was heavy ...

GPU Computing: Intel's Larrabee - AMD's Fusion
GPU Computing Gets Ready for Act II The idea of general-purpose computing on graphics processing units (GPGPU) continues to capture the imagination of the HPC community. But the three big players -- Intel, NVIDIA and AMD -- all have their ideas on how this new technology should play out. When Intel rejected the whole notion of general-purpose computing on graphics processing units (GPGPU) at the spring 2007 IDF meeting with its announcement of its upcoming Larrabee product line, the digerati began to buzz about what the future might hold for the GPU. For those who might not have heard about it, Larrabee is Intel's answer to the programmable GPU, the technology that is bringing GPGPU to the masses. The Larrabee architecture could be characterized as the anti-GPU entry. The overall approach is an attempt to evolve the CPU into a terascale data parallel engine. According to Intel, Larrabee will be a manycore (i.e., more than 8 cores) device and will be based on a subset of the IA instruction set with some extra GPU-like instructions thrown in. Intel has not elaborated on how it intends to do this, but one could imagine super-sized SSE units with just enough x86 CPU silicon to enable general-purpose flow control and data access. The first product release will probably come in 2009, but Intel says it may have something to demo as early as next year. The idea behind Larrabee is to bring both traditional graphics processing and data parallel computing under the IA umbrella. ...

It's a copier, no it's a computer...
An office for which I consult just purchased a Savin 4045sp copier/scanner/printer. I would normally handle any computer-related purchases, but since this was "just a copier," I didn't hear about it until the deal was completed. The more I see of its specs, the more the Savin looks like an Internet-capable computer with potentially serious security issues. Besides being able to serve as a network printer, it has a 20 GB hard drive, and can connect to the Internet to upload its own "scan and send" emails. The salesman convinced the office manager that there would...

Error? s = assignin('base','s',tf('s'));
Hi, I need a little help here. Could anyone please tell me what is wrong with this command? s = assignin('base','s',tf('s')); The matlab syntax is -- assignin(ws, 'var', val) Basically I just want to add s=tf('s') into the base workspace. What does the error message say? Something about too many output arguments, right? How many output arguments does the documentation for ASSIGNIN show that it should return? How many are you asking it to return? http://www.mathworks.com/access/helpdesk/help/techdoc/ref/assignin.html -- Steve Lord slord@mathworks.com ...

It's primitive; it's dumb; it's brittle--but it's AI.
http://www.scn.org/~mentifex/aisource.html is a pathway to the http://code.google.com/p/mindforth AI project at Google Code. The AI is primitive because it has only enough features to demon- strate thinking. It is "dumb" inasmuch as it has barely any IQ. It is extremely brittle because the slightest change in the code can destroy the artificial mind crafted so painstakingly in Forth: Arthur -- http://agi-roadmap.org/Milestones -- ten years of progress. ...

What's your computer's name? [OT]
Just a sort of random thought; my first Linux was Slackware 2 or 3 or so - downloaded it back in the mid-1980s and it was funner than a rat. Had fvwm going, running that era's netscape, had apache going, at least locally (I think I exposed a virtual host once). But the area where I had to make something up was thinking up a name for the computer. I came up with "Vehicle," the logic being that it's a transport mechanism for information back and forth to the outside world. My main computer, I called Entheos, because I have a DBA of "Entheos Engineering." I came up w...

Steve Jobs: It's worse when he's not yelling
http://valleywag.gawker.com/5035782/apple-ceo-steve-jobs Apple CEO Steve Jobs Steve Jobs: It's worse when he's not yelling Steve Jobs's hot temper is as notorious as it is well-documented. The Apple CEO parks in handicapped spots. He'll fire employees in a tantrum. But more fearsome yet is Jobs's indifference. Even calm, calculated words can shrivel his underlings' spirits. He's created a cold atmosphere at Apple headquarters in Cupertino, one former employee tells us: No one greets him or says hi to him. Low ranking employees are afraid of him...
