Need AI helpSubject: Distributed Computing
I recently stumbled upon Gateway, Inc.'s distributed computing site where
Gateway was advertising rental access to their cluster of computers. Upon
further research I found that they were charging $0.15 per hour of CPU time,
per machine. I was wondering if anyone knows of similar services that exist
for distributed computing? The rental model would fit my problem the best -
are there services that rent computing time that are cheaper than Gateway,
Inc.'s charges?

Need help with help needFriends and wormbots:
I am looking for some intrepid souls to try out and comment on a perl script
I wrote.
(What, perl in SAS-L and it's not David Cassell ?)
The script takes the SAS help files apart and does some analysis (orphans,
linkrot and duplicates) and inserts back links.
What do back links do ? It ensures every page in the help system has a link
to every page that links to it.
(Actually only the the subset of the help system represented by the modules
you choose to play with [there are over 140 help modules])
1,000 lines of perl that sprouted out of a two line seed (or should...
Urgent: Need help to compute expectation (Integration) over a normally distributed random variable.Dear Friends,
Suppose we have the following system,
Customer demand x that is considered to be a positive stochastic random variable with probability density function f(x) and cumulative distribution function F(x).
order quantity: Q. The mean value of x is 400 units, while the standard deviation is 130 units.
Selling price, p=40. wholesale price, W=30, salvage value S=23, Order quantity Q=150.
if the order Quantity is more than market demand, Q>=x, then the expected profit of retailer is calculated by integrating this function E(Q)=[(p-w)*x-(w-s)*(Q-x)]*f(x)dx from Q=0 to 150...

Theoretical Distributed Computing (was: *Real* Distributed Computing)[Responding to David C. DiNucci's post from October 1, 2005]
Hi David.
I hope to follow up in full on your last message shortly. There's a
lot to read (a good thing)! I will try to discuss a couple things in
more depth
The usefullness of modelling global states - how they relate to:
- adversaries
- levels of network awareness: does each process know how many other
processors are collaborating? Is the number of processors fixed or
varying? Is the network fixed or dynamic?
Do the processors have any 'sense' of direction' in the network?
Distributed knowl...

help: want write sth to help me to do repeated jobs in batch, need some directions.Hi all,
I've 4 thousands + pictures to be ocrs, ONE by ONE.
This is what I have to do with them:
for each one of the 4k pages, I'll have to open it in a special reader (3rd
party to Wiondows), click on a menu to choose to copy it to clipboard, which
will automatically trigger the MS clipboard viewer to open up. From there
I'll have to save it as a .jpg or bmp file. Then I'll have to open it in my
OCR program (3rd-party to MS Windows XP) to do the OCR it.
I want to do the above procedures, entirely or partially, in a batch
fashion, ie to write a program to have ...

distributed computing without the distributed computing toolboxWe have several linux workstation and each of them has matlab installed on it. They share the same data file system (NFS). Unfortunately we do not have the distributed computing toolbox and the management is not planning to buy it. So I am trying to find a workaround to use the workstations in parallel for my computation. I could think of 3 ideas, and I'd like to get some suggestions and comments from the community.
1) execute matlab via ssh: ssh user@host 'matlab -nodisplay -r "myfun(1,2,3)" '. This would require a script to handle the different connections and feed...

Help! Distributed ComputingI am trying to implement a concept which goes like this.....
There are 6 processor nodes, each having some redundant data (the data
is purposely made redundant). The idea is to merge the data, leaving
out the redundancy.
When data is read from processor-1 and processor-2, to be merged, at
the same time I would also like to read data from processor-2 and
processor-3 to be merged, processor -3 and processor-4 to be merged,
processor-4 and processor-5 to be merged and processor-5 and
processor-6 to be merged. It would form criss-cross pattern.
I was wondering, if anyone has implemented this and...
