CLAX access

  • Follow

Since goooogle is doing the commercial thing, it will be instituting a
'new' groups that requires a browser update. I'm looking for other
ways to access CLAX.

On my search, I've run across: http://compgroups.net/comp.lang.asm.x86/
but the last propagated message is from 4/26/2011, so I'm wondering
why that is.

I'm looking for a replacement for GG that has the same basic
functionality, web front-end, if possible. Any tips?

I use Outlook Express and a free news service:

I think you can still submit via email to CLAX. The email gateway is still
available, yes? I.e., send to:

  clax86-submit [@] inspiretomorrow [dot] net

Web? Ok.

A few web enabled Usenet archives always come up when I search for something
related to Usenet posts. One is called Rhinocerous, and the other one is
Derkeiler ... These are most likely read-only, web accessable archives.

If you get yourself a news client (MS Outlook, Thunderbird, Opera Mail part
of Opera browser), you could use free non-Web Usenet. Of course, almost all
of these require Linux or Windows.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_Usenet_newsreaders

Non web:

AIOE offers normal NNTP connections for free with post and read access.
They have a web page with their policies:
news://news.aioe.org
news://nntp.aioe.org
http://www.aioe.org/

NNTP read only, text only. Textnews:
news://textnews.cambrium.nl

There are a number of other free services, most are read-only. A few
others, like Tornevall, are postable too. You can check this post by me for
more:
http://groups.google.com/group/comp.lang.forth/msg/4d43b392163f4d3c

I'm not sure what you mean by "goooogle is doing the commercial thing". The
commercial thing in regards to Usenet was you could read text-only groups
(free-to-read-text), but not read binary groups (pay-to-read-binary), and
not post (pay-to-post). The ability to post to Usenet for free has
historically been the problem. Web forums are free, and that contributes to
their popularity, but they require an account setup which requires email.

If Google truly goes commercial, the big issue for you will be posting
access to Usenet. I.e., you probably won't get post access for free. Only
a few groups have email gateways. I.e., you could email to post to CLAX,
but you wouldn't be able to post to alt.lang.asm etc.

If GG is going commercial, this could be a problem for you. There seems to
be a "Go back to the old Google Groups" button. Does that work? If they
get many people using that, it may be around for a while. I don't seem to
see anything on what exactly is "going away".

What browser update do they require? I.e., are they locking people into
Chrome?

Personally, I think that free and open-access Usenet really needs a pull
server. I.e., you submit sites via html webpage. That server pulls news by
connecting to the sites in it's site-list, instead of propagating news to
other servers, from all available open servers. Combined with free post
access, this would shift the volume and demand away from commercial
providers, perhaps finally unlocking the market entirely. If combined with
PK encryption programs, say PGP or GPG, it'd make a good secure email
server too.

Thanks everyone, I'll spare ot replies by moving this to
alt.os.development.

But briefly:

The new Google Groups interface is not supported in your web browser.
Please use Chrome, Firefox 3.5+, or Internet Explorer 8 to participate
in discussions.Groups
