Internet Explorer FileDownload Event & Automation Error - Visual Basic 6

Private Declare Function GetForegroundWindow Lib "user32" () As Long
Public WithEvents IE As SHDocVw.InternetExplorer

Private Sub Timer1_Timer()

Dim strTitle As String
Dim lngRet As Long
Dim AppName As String
lngRet = GetForegroundWindow()
On Error GoTo ErrorMsg

    If (lngRet <> IE.hwnd) Then
    Set objShell = New Shell

        For Each obj In objShell.Windows
            If TypeName(obj.Document) = "HTMLDocument" Then
                If obj.hwnd = lngRet Then
                Set IE = obj
                Label1.Caption = ""
                End If
            End If
       Next obj
    End If

Form2.Caption = IE.LocationName
Form2.Refresh

Exit Sub

ErrorMsg:

Label1.Caption = Err.Number & " # " & Err.Description
Resume Next

End Sub

Private Sub IE_FileDownload(Cancel As Boolean)
MsgBox "A file download is about to start."
End Sub

#######################################################

In the above code,

1. The file download event never occurs.

2. Also the program suddenly stops because of an Automation error that
says "The object invoked has disconnected from its clients" with error
number -2147417848.

What are the solutions for the above two problems?

I have VB Service Pack 5 & 6 installed in my pc.

to answer your first statement, the people who can help will need to see the
code that calls IE_FileDownLoad()

(If you don't have any code to call it, the event will certainly never occur)

I'm presuming the error DOESN'T occur in the timer structure, because your own
error message isn't displayed.
Actually, it could be the time delay you've set is too small, or even when you
enable/disable the timer, so you will need to give those who can help you some
more information, or the code where the error is really occuring

Actually FileDownload is an event of Internet Explorer which fires
similarly as the other events does. As for example

Private Sub IE_BeforeNavigate2(ByVal pDisp As Object, URL As Variant,
Flags As Variant, TargetFrameName As Variant, PostData As Variant,
Headers As Variant, Cancel As Boolean)
    If (MsgBox("Do you want to navigate to " & Trim(URL), vbYesNo +
vbQuestion) = vbNo) Then
    Cancel = True
    End If
End Sub

The following files have been added as references:

Microsoft Internet Controls (system32\shdocvw.dll)
Microsoft Shell Controls and Automation (system32\shell32.dll)

There is a timer control with interval=100 and a label named Label1 on
the form to display the error messages.

Other than that there is no special code.

Through this code, the current Internet Explorer window's title is
being displayed as this program's title bar's caption.

  I don't know the answer to this, but a few points
that might help:

* FileDownload is IE6+ only and a quick Google search
turns up several links about it not firing in some instances.
(I have IE5 here, so I can't test that.)

* Can you do WithEvents with an object that may
keep changing? I haven't tried it, but it doesn't
seem like a good idea.

* I would think you should do an Exit For once you
get an IE instance, since you'll otherwise be
dropping that IE for the next one in the next
iteration if there is more than one instance running.

* You didn't include the code that runs after you
find the window you want, so there's not much
for anyone to go on in terms of figuring out why
the download event isn't firing. For instance, you're
checking the foreground window but not setting
your choice of IE windows to foreground. I don't
follow what the foreground test is for. It sounds like
you're somehow de-referencing your IE instance.
(Possibly in the loop, as noted above.)

* I agree with Argusy on the interval. Why would you
go through all windows 1 times per second? Wouldn't
once per second be enough? Or maybe even less. That
might be worth testing.

* If you want to download a file for the client there
are much less clunky ways to do it than with IE.
If you just want to go to a website with IE then
are DownloadBegin and DownloadComplete events.

Basic BASIC
Now that our series on Basic for Beginners - Basic BASIC by Ray Favre - is at an end, those who have not read the series may wish to purchase the back copies of Qercus that include the six parts of Basic BASIC. The series takes a complete beginner to programming and introduces sufficient to get you started and producing your own programs. Examples are listed within the article or in the Yellow Pages feature in the magazine and these can be typed in by the reader. These listings will also be available on the Qercus website. Purchasers of the series, who don't have access to the internet, can request a copy of the listings on disk at the time they place their order. MS BASIC, Sinclair BASIC, STOS BASIC: derivatives comparison?
I see that there're a number of derivatives of MS BASIC, Sinclair BASIC, and STOS BASIC still in active development (e. g.: QB64, MMBasic; BASin; sdlBasic.) And, as it seems, there's a renewed interest in smaller, "BASIC-as-an-OS" computers (check, e. g., Maximite [1] and its derivatives.) I wonder if there's a good comparison of their respective features? I'm especially interested in any of them being compared to either Beta BASIC (a Sinclair BASIC derivative, presumably no longer in development), or its derivatives (SAM BASIC, MasterBASIC.) TIA. “ and Internet Explorer (6)
People insist on examples, so here is my page: http://swiftys.org.uk/therules.html A colleague in China is viewing the page using IE6 any my “ characters are coming out as pair of Chinese glyphs, and taking the following plain ASCII character with them. The rest of the page is rendered more or less correctly. I'd always assumed that things like “ would render correctly under all circumstances, unless the client didn't have the right font to display them. Is this more likely a font issue on the target system or an IE6 problem? COM automation, Internet Explorer, DocumentComplete event
I'm very new to Python and have a question concerning IE automation and detection of page completion. The MSDN article 180366 states in part: ---- The top-level frame fires the DocumentComplete in the end. So, to check if a page is done downloading, you need to check if the IDispatch* parameter is same as the IDispatch of the WebBrowser control. For Visual Basic, here is code that performs this check: Private Sub WebBrowser1_DocumentComplete(ByVal pDisp As Object, URL As Variant) If (pDisp Is WebBrowser1.Object) Then Debug.Print "Web document is finished downloading" End If End Sub ---- I'm able to catch IE's events including DocumentComplete with: def OnDocumentComplete(self, pDisp, URL): so i have pDisp. Self is the object returned by: self.ie = DispatchWithEvents("InternetExplorer.Application", InternetExplorerEvents) that created the automation object. How do I perform the test in Python? iNotes60: error while fetching records in Internet Explorer 6
Hi. We've got a Domino 6.5 server on a Windows 2000 platform. Several users are reporting an error from Internet Explorer when they want to browse their inbox. They use template iNotes60 as a web mail interface. The errors occur only on some machines. Some XP machines work and some don't. I have a Windows 2K SP4 machine (with IE6) and I also get the error message in a message box. I have read on an IBM FAQ that the error might be due to MDAC 2.8 but I don't have MDAC 2.8. I have MDAC 2.6 and 2.7. Anyway I highly suspect MSIE updates to be responsible for that problem...

Re: &&&&&& #6
This is a prime example I use when I discuss what is wrong with the macro language. Yes, you can figure it out but an alternative would be to simply write your data step code out and then bring it back in so you know what is being submitted. data _null_ ; file 'c:\myfile.sas' ; put 'data ...;' ; ...more put statements... run; %include 'c:\myfile.sas' ; Others will argue for SCL or something else. Regardless, this application probably requires a complete rethink if you are using 6 ampersands.
