Identity fields in Clarion

Hi.

I am working in a new application with MSSQL driver.

I want define an unique code field in each table. I declare the field in
dictionary with PRIMARY,UNIQUE and the Referencial Integrity in Server side.
Is this correct or i must change in the server the field type to Identity?.

I began using the free SQLAN55 template from Jim Kane, but when i open the
table an error say about troubles using the dummy file. Do i must modify the
name file in application?

Which is the best solution?.

Thanks

As far as I know, you must go into the mssql-server and set the identity
there.... if you don't have FM3 from Capesoft.

Ruben,

There is some information about this at my site. If your table has an
IDENTITY column specified in MSSQL then that does the autonumbering for you.
If you need to know the value of the identity column, eg to populate child
records while in a parent form then you will need to use a method, such as
Jim's SQLAN, or the template at my site, for getting that value from MSSQL.

Thanks. I am using SQLAN55, but the first time i insert a record, then
Clarion say an error about access to "dummy" table. The next time i insert a
record it work ok.

I going to test your template also.

To set the record straight jim kane does NOT use his own sqlan template. It
uses @@identity which is unreliable. I had intermittent errors where it
returned the wrong result when running a process on a background thread and
users could be working on a foreground thread.
Instead I write an insert stored procedure for each file. Actually I worte a
program that reads the mssql master tables and writes the stored procedures.
When the stored procedure is called, all the fields in the file are input
parameters except for the identity field which is an output parameter.
inside the stored procedure I use scope_identity() to get the identity
value. I just replace the access:insert and access:tryinsert code with calls
to the stored procedures. A co worker wrote a template to do that because I
dont do well with templates. I use my own odbc class to call the stored
procedures. That method is fool proof. I do not recommend using my former
template or any other piece of code that uses @@identity.

Yes, I had this all the time with SQLAN & C55 - don't use it!

If you want to use @@Identity (and I have *never* had a problem with the
MSSQL part of that, only with accessing it via Clarion!!!), use Geoff
Bomford's approach.. or hand-code y'self.

Hi Ruben,

FM3 is not just a conversion tool. It is a file management tool. It can
create SQL tables, and then continue to maintain and upgrade them each time
you make a change in your dictionary. FM3 has special features such as
specifying IDENTITY on the backend etc. It's all in the docs. Mail me
privately if you need further assistance.

Thanks.

Clarion 2 entry fields fail but text fields work if specific programs installed on XP. Clarion 5 apps ok.
Hi, I have a large number of customers running a old Clarion 2 app which never needs to be changed. It would be very expensive to convert the app to Clarion 5 or 6 and no change to the logic will ever be required. It is perfect for its task as it is. When I run it on XP just after the operating system is installed it works fine. If I install a number of apps like Nvidia dual screen software and many others it stops working. The text controls are fine. The data in entry controls displays on the screen but is erased from the control as soon as the control is accepted. Clarion 5 apps using some identical windows run fine on the same computers. Has anyone else run across this problem and if so is there any fix other than converting the whole app to a later version of Clarion? All the best. No idea what the cause of the problem is, but barring the use of some ugly (ie: work on cw2 only) or oddball 3rd party software, you should be able to open the cw2 app in c55 and compile and go. Probably in c6 too, but definitely in c55. Almost all of our legacy-based apps came to life under 1501, 2002 or 2003 and have been c5, c55 and partly c6 apps. Clarion DOS to Clarion Windows Conversion
Hi Newsmembers - What problems have you encountered when converting from a DOS-based Clarion project to Clarion for Windows. I'll be using Clarion version 5.5, and upgrading to 6.0 in the near future. Thankyou, - Kevin Willis klwillis.dsl@verizon.net ICQ:32805500 A fully rewrite is generally required. If you have a bunch of logic code (formulas and such), then you can convert that source without too much effort. What Clarion really is: It is a database centric language with a code generating IDE, which will basically complete 70 - 80% of your DATA MAINTENANCE code after you designed your tables/files in the Data Dictionary. Migrate project from clarion 2.1 into clarion 6.x
Hello all, our company has 50 years in the market, and we used clarion 2.1 20 years ago to handle our payroll. It has worked non-stop, but right now we have to make some modifications to the program and are evaluating clarion 6.0. Basically we have two options: -Migrate the .dat files to SQL and develop the whole thing from scratch -Migrate the .dat files to clarion 6.0 dct files and try to migrate most of the code Right now we are focusing on option #2, but since we have lots of .dat files (about 20 or 30 or so) i would like to know if there is a quick way to convert every one of them to the new format. I have the documentation and read the migration document, but it basically says that i should reconstruct the dictionary and copy and paste the old code into the new code where appropiate, but doesn't explain how to migrate the data. If anyone has a resource or documentation explaining this in little more detail it would be appreciated. Basically right now i am using Data Modeler and Importing the structure from a table with the clarion 2.1 driver Hi Seguros, You have the tool DMC which is supposed to read any table and let you clone it DAT 2 SQL for example regarding the 'old' dat format as we never worked with those tables if you want us to look into this to help you out cloning to new structure, please send us an example 'old' dat structure (with key files and memo files) so that we try it out in DMC and let you know You can also try out DMC you...

Clarion IP driver/Clarion 6
I had a production Clarion IP Server running on a Windows XP machine (a VM Guest). All but three of my Data managers have been unloaded and do not appear on the list of installable DLL's. I have a development server running and all is ok, but I un-installed the IP Server, deleted it, copied the working one and installed it, but when I refreshed the data managers, it removed the same ones. I have made a new VM...a Windows 7 Ultimate, installed the IP server from the Development machine, but this also removes and refuses to load the same data managers. What am I missing? El jue...

::: Data Conversion
I have several Clarion DOS v2.1 DOS data files with keys - .DAT and .KXX files respectively - that I'd like to convert over to Clarion 5.5 How would I go about converting this data? Kevin Willis klwillis.dsl@verizon.net ICQ:32805500 Hi Kevin, Clarion 5.5 will read and write Clarion DOS v2.109 .dat files just fine. If the files are from a version earlier than v2.109 then deleting the key (.kxx) files and opening the files in Clarion 5.5 should convert them for you. The changes are in the keys. We've done this a fiar bit when migrating dos apps to windows - we leave the data strucutres "untouched". This allows for both Dos & windows programs to work at the same time, and makes for a very smooth change-over. After that you can use File Manager 3 (www.capesoft.com) to painlessly convert it to any of the other structures that clarion offers. cheers Bruce "Gregory C. Innovative Professional Grade Tools from a Cutting Edge Software Developer While Clarion ProSeries (http://www.clarionproseries.com/) is currently only a two product site - one released ProScan (http://www.clarionproseries.com/html/proimage.html) and another ProImage (http://www.clarionproseries.com/html/proscan.html) to follow shortly, Charles Edmonds of LANSRAD has certainly set the stage for what a Clarion Third Party Add-on site can be OUT of the starting gate. Let's start with the overall design of the web site - it's one thing to start with some web design tools, hopefully employ some artistic creativity and create something that will be easy to navigate, and display your products logically. Charles has another approach - Create a tool EZRound (http://www.ezround.com/) - that will help you create stunning banners, graphics and buttons AND then he created a technique called Site Styles that will help you enhance the standard site styles that ship with NetObjects Fusion (or any other website development too...

multiline fields in clarion report writer
hi everyone. i have a problem: i would like to have a multiline fild that contains a string data taken from database, but i don't have a clarion program - only editing the txr file. What do i need to modify in this file? Thanx. PS:Now i have a field that have only one line I may be wrong, but I think helping you with this would be a violation of the licence agreement, that says that a license of ReportWriter has to be purchased if the end user want to edit the reports. Clarion Magazine (http://www.clarionmag.com/) Rated Top Rated - 2nd Tier - March 01, 2006 Clarion Third Party Best Worst Dressed List Complete Best Dressed - Worst Dressed List at: http://tinyurl.com/24gca Before I begin the evaluation - let me note, there are few NON Clarion Third Party Developers listed. As such, they must ask to be listed, and obviously have a strong connection to Clarion Third Party Developers/Products. And since these web sites are not competing directly in similar ways that Clarion Third Party Developers have in common, I will not issue Best Dressed ranking to any of these sites. Top Rated - 2nd Tier will be the highest designation given if the site deserves it. Of course, this is the Number One resource for Clarion Education, bar none! BUG in Clarion 6 field lookup control?
I continue to have a problem with the entry control lookup in Clarion 6. In my C55 ABC app this works fine. However when I use it in Clarion 6 it causes the app to crash. I'm simply placing the entry control lookup button next to my field. I set the action tab to the appropriate field and the action tab of the field to call the lookup list. I have even tried using the ABC free version of this. Still, when I click on the lookup button it crashes the app. I'm running Win XP home and this is a multi-dll ABC app. Any thoughts on this? Thanks. I seem to have stumbled upon a solution. Here is the scenario: I have a main exe that calls a dll from a button. This dll has another call to a third dll which is simply a browse called as a lookup list. In order for this to work in my C6 app I must have a "stray" version of the third dll called in the main exe. I simply added it and it hangs off the app tree by itself, not being used at all in the main exe. Apparently the main exe creates some sort of reference to it so it can be successfully called from the second dll. This was not necessary in the C55EE version of the app. One final note, it does not seem to be a Windows XP problem as I first thought. I copied the C6 app to a Windows 2000 machine and the same error ocurred, until I added the third dll to the main exe. Any thoughts on this?
