I found very few new spam messages on Google Groups
yesterday, and suspect that it means that Google
Groups is finally doing something to stop the spam,
at least in this newsgroup.

As for what, my guess is that they're now linked
into the NoCeM network for hiding spam.

If so, expect very little spam posted through GG
in this newsgroup in the future, but still some
posted through other sites.

I haven't checked yet if GG is doing the same for
other newsgroups.

If you want to see most of the spam from other sites
hidden also, you can install some NoCeM software
yourself if you're running Linux, or ask your
newsgroups provider to run it if they don't do this
already.

If they're trying NoCeM, it's no longer working.

It looks like all of you who have GG accounts should
ask them to apply NoCeM.

comp.lang.fortran is now spam-free on my NNTP server, but a couple of
other groups have some spam (probably not automatically generated but
rather completely off-topic posts). How can one get this NoCeM stuff to
get rid of them?

I'm not sure you can. You'd need to convince whoever is generating
the NoCeM information for those groups that it should be removed and
you may need to supply some hints on how to tell a program that it
is completely off-topic.

It's possible that no one is generating NoCeM information for
those groups yet, in which case running the NoCeM software will
do nothing for those groups.

Also, with the current NoCeM software, you'd either need to be
running Linux before installing the software, or find a newsgroups
server that is already running NoCeM software (I suspect that Eternal
September may be your best choice).

But if you're using only GG, about all you can do is help
convince GG to apply NoCeM, in which case you'll have no need
to use the NoCeM software yourself.

I saw a rather large batch of spam on Google Groups yesterday
in this newsgroup, so I suspect that most of the spammers are now
saving their efforts to send all the spam only after a spammer with a
fast computer has posted a certain number of spam posts - and
that happens about every three days.
