Interestingly, my news reader said that there were 256 unread messages
in the newsgroup, but after selecting the newsgroup, it displayed only
54 subject lines. Suggestive of some sort of delete mechanism at work.
Spam probably upped the article count, and deletions probably left
holes in the numbering sequence, leaving only 54 to read.

Are you sure? There was one about 4 hours ago, and several about 8 hours a=
go.
Looks more like the number was reduced enough that your newsgroups server c=
ould filter out all the rest.
Though it could be that Google Groups is now not sending the spam to Usenet=
if it is marked as spam fast enough.
For any spammers reading this thread: After we get enough nations of the w=
orld to declare that spammers no longer qualify as human, we can ask medica=
l researchers to list how many spammers they can use for growing whatever v=
irus they are currently doing research on. For example, the Ebola virus.

I don't really think spammers read anything. They just devote
all their time improving their 'spamming' skills...

You are probably using a NoCeM-aware news server.
Some spam-cleaning has been done through <news:news.lists.filters>.
