adobe acrobat does not close with javaw.exe running

Let me ask the java folks...

This may be a setting in the compiler or an interaction problem or an
old dll on WinXP OS w/SP2, but ...
AcroRd32.exe does not close when another application has javaw.exe
(windowless java) up.
By closing I mean that the application remains in Task Manager and
does not end though the window is removed from the desktop (not
displayed and ceased to be drawn). This of course affects the second
launching of adobe which simply starts but never displays (draws a
window) on the desktop.

Ending all ArcoRd32.exe allows acrobat reader 7.0 to launch properly,
of course it doesn't close properly.
Closing javaw.exe allows AcroRd32.exe to close.
Running a debugger(MS VisC++) allows AcroRd32.exe to close when the
debugger session is closed, while java remains up.

IEXPLORER.EXE also won't close and new instances are created with each
launching of the application.

Any clues or hints on how to fix this?
