$(document) and jQuery(document)

I had a widget, which broke after some other things were updated.

It was saying:

    TypeError: 'undefined' is not a function (evaluating '$('#id_conta
    cts_and_people-phonecontact-content_type-object_id-0-label').combo
    box()')

Last night, I finally managed to fix it, after noticing that this script
(which is injected into the HTML body as many times as required for each
widget) began:

    $(document).ready(function(){

while others I had seen began:

    jQuery(document).ready(function($){

Changing it to the latter form made it work.

The only thing is, I don't really understand what was wrong, or how
doing that fixed it.

I understand that a jQuery conflict of some kind meant that jQuery was
unable to find the function "combobox()" and that probably this was
because of the way the template was loading JavaScript files.

But I don't understand what the changes actually mean, or what they do.

If someone can explain what is going on in this example, that would be
really helpful.

Thanks,

Daniele

You're not generally very likely to get much help that specific to
jQuery here. You might want to check in their help forums. jQuery
and most general-purpose libraries are not well-thought of on
comp.lang.javascript.

That said, from what I've seen of jQuery, usually `$` is simply an
alias to `jQuery` unless specifically overwritten. The latter syntax
is a way to more comfortably share the global namespace with other
libraries that might also want to define `$`. So if you're not
including other libraries, and not redefining `$` yourself, I have no
idea why one would work and not the other.

Combining documents into one document
I currently provide a document to our customer that consists of our program progress and various appendices in Microsoft Word. I am interested in whether anyone knows of a program that will allow you to combine the separate Word documents into one. Here is the catch: The tech volume and 2 of the appendices do not need to be secured, but one of the documents needs to be secure so that only appointed folks can open that specific document. Microsoft Binder allows this, but our customer is moving towards Office 2000 which does not support the Binder and has caused some issues in our deliv...

Integrating package documentation with the documentation center
Although the documentation center (DC) came with version 6.0, there is (to my knowledge) still no published method for fully integrating package documentation with this system (at least not without using the Wolfram Workbench). As part of work on my new DebugTrace package, I believe I have uncovered the interface mechanism - using commands from the undocumented DocumentationSearch` (!!) context. Using these commands, it is possible to create documentation which pops up when F1 is pressed inside one of your exported symbols, and which appears in searches done within the DC. ...

document.all
Hello, 1. The document.all property (array?) seems to be a popular IE-only attribute. Other browsers (Opera, Mozilla) do not seem to care for it which, of course, occasionally produces weird displays and non-functional links. Is it, indeed, a IE-ism? 2. While experimenting with the elusive document.all, I ran into a sort of catch-22, it least with Mozilla. I tried testing (null == document.all) to decide if the property exists, and get a warning (in the Mozilla Javascript console) that the property does not exist. Hm. Is there a robust way to test for a property that may not exist?...
