opening a labview 8.5 file with labview 8.21
Hello,I was working on a project at home with labview 8.21, I nearly finished this project but I addes some stuff at school where they have labview 8.5.Today I wanted to open the labview file on my computer, but It gave an error:
labview load error 9: Vi version 8.5 is newer then labVIEW version 8.2.1.Is there any way I can open the file on my computer?Or can I save the file at school als a 8.2.1 file?
thnx in advance,Seppe
Hi Seppe, just save it in school using "Save to previous" from the file menu...
You'll have to reopen the file on a computer with LV 8.5. From there you can do a Save as Previous Version to save back to LV 8.2.1
Hi Seppe, if you have LabView 8.5 you can save your vi for previous verions (8.2.1 and 8.0)Mike
ok, thnx for all the correct answers !
...labview 8.2 llb run with labview 8.5
On the PC I have delete labview 8.2, but I dont find the CD for reinstall. I have a .llb file made with labview 8.2, Can i run it with labview 8.5 or download labview 8.2, I muss install ii rapidelly.
Costello, you can update the VIs within the LLB to LV 8.5 if they do not have their blockdiagram removed.....hope this helps,Norbert
How can I update ? When I start the .vi in the lbb he dont found somme .vi located in DAQmx (wrtie.lbb, start task.lbb,...) How can i install this lbb?
Costello, if you get loading errors when opening one VI from the LLB like you the ones you get, you have missing components.Since you spoke of DAQmx, i asume that you didn't install NI DAQmx on your machine. You should catch that up.hope this helps,Norbert
...Can LabView 8.5 read LabView 8.5.1 VIs
Since LabVIEW 8.5.1 is only a bug fix, can LabVIEW 8.5 read any VIs generated in LabVIEW 8.5.1?
Simple answer YES. But it will the VIs compile so it is a good idea to make a mass compile in the folder where the VIs are.
...How can I run a labview 7.2 vi in labview 8.2
We have several versions of labview running different test and control functions in our facility. There are labview 7.2 VIs in a production setting I wish to reproduce in the test lab. Can I convert them to run on 8.2 or do I have to recreate them in 8.2. I tried to open one in 8.2 and got multiple SubVI's that were not in my program library.. most dealing with AI manipulation.
And make sure you have backup copies of your 7.x code. Once you load and save in 8.2, it is a lot of work to get them back to 7.x.
Note I used 7.x because I am unaware of LabVIEW version 7.2 even existing. 7.1.1 was the last release prior to 8.0
...labview 8.2 to 8.5?
I have an older version of labview (8.2) and wanted to know if i could update it to the current version without having to buy a whole new system.
Are you asking if there are additional costs to upgrading from LV8.2 to LV8.5?
If that is asking, the answer is yes. You can purchase a Standard Service Program (which is typically included for the first year), which means you automatically get upgrades.
The other option is to go to this link: <a href="http://www.ni.com/labview/" target="_blank">http://www.ni.com/labview/</a> and select upgrade. You then enter your serial number and it should tell you how much to upgrade to 8.5 and/or to a more complete version of LabVIEW.
A third alternative is to contact your local NI representative with whom you can discuss your LV sw / upgrade needs.
Here is the link to the SSP program: <a href="http://sine.ni.com/nips/cds/view/p/lang/en/nid/13351" target="_blank">http://sine.ni.com/nips/cds/view/p/lang/en/nid/13351</a>

...Opening VI written in labview 5.0 with version 8.5
I am new to Labview. I have VIs to capture the Tektronics real time scope waveforms written in Labview 5.0. I am currently using is evaluation version 8.5. I am getting an error that the new version does not support these old files. I just want to open these files and look at the code for reference. Can anyone suggest a way to open these files.
One way would be for someone to open it in a version that still supported it and is supported by LV8.5.
For instance, if you post the VI(s) (and hopefully not too many of them), I could open and save them as LV7.x. Hopefully nothing gets broken to this stange and the VI could then be opened and saved to LV8.5.
Thanks a lot for your offfer.
I have a .llb file which has a group of files and one vi files. It will be very helpfull ... Thanks in advance.
The llb cannot be converted because the VIs have no block diagrams. Find the original llb with the source code or you will have to rewrite everything from scratch.
As Dennis explained, there is not much you can do... See images below:

In order to go from LV 8.5 to LV 7, you will need to have LV 8.5 (save it back to 8.0), LV 8.0 (save it back to 7.1) and LV 7.1 (to save back to 7.0).
If it's only a few small VI's, you can post them on the forum and ask someone to do the saves for you. (Best if you do the save back to 8.0 and post that in order to eliminate 1 of the 3 steps for whoever will do the rest of the conversions for you.)
yeah. great.. i did all those steps.i went from 8.0 to 7.1i dont have labview 7.1 so i can't go to 7.0.can someone please help me.
Please try the attached to see if it works with LV7.0
Hopefully it does!!
thank you so much. i'll try it right now.

Hello It might seem odd and very stupid if you have done it before.I previously used a Labview 8.2 system. Now I have upgraded to Labview 8.5 system and Simulation Module 8.2 .I did install Simulation Module and it dint show up in my Labview 8.5 environment. Is there any manual method so that i can add this module on to 8.5 . Im sure labview is backward compatibility. Is there a way to add this module to 8.5 so that i can work with this module ?Message Edited by Bharath kumar on 04-07-2008 09:53 AM
Hi Bharath, What probably happened is that you installed the module under LabVIEW 8.2. By default, toolkits and modules can only be installed for one version of LabVIEW. However, <a href="http://digital.ni.com/public.nsf/allkb/58BE852CB35237C786256A290079DF39?OpenDocument" target="_blank">KnowledgeBase 288G6JB5: Installing Toolkits for Use with Multiple Versions of LabVIEW</a> details how to install the module for multiple versions. Another way would be to reinstall the toolkit and make sure that you have LabVIEW 8.5 selected as the destination. Good Luck! Wes PApplications EngineerNational Instruments
The LabVIEW Simulation 8.2 is a Module, which means that it can only work with the version that was created for. In this case, it only work on LabVIEW 8.2.
In the 8.5, we joint the Control Design Toolkit with the Simulation Module creating the LV Control Design ...Activate labview 8.5 with version 8.2.1 installed
I have a system with labview version 8.2.1 installed. Now we have got a new version, 8.5 witch I have also installed, with the same serial code. When I want to work with version 8.5 it asks to activate, but version 8.2.1 works the way it used to be.
Did I instal it wrong? Upgrade insted of a new installation? Or should I unistal version 8.2.1 before installing version 8.5?
As Matthew mentioned, all versions need to be activated.
There is no reason to uninstall a previous version, you should actually keep it around in case you run into some upgrade issues.
Your start menu should have a link to the NI license manager. It will tell you exactly what you have installed and even lets you activate what needs to be activated. :)

You have to save from 8.5 to 8.2 and then from 8.2 to 8.0 with "Save for previous" option.

...Reference Objects in LabVIEW
Several attendees requested LabVIEW 8.5 data for the benchmarks I showed at my NI Week presentation - TS1284 - Reference Objects in LabVIEW. In addition, the severe performance degradation seen in Datasockets going from LabVIEW 7.1 to 8.2 was an artifact of my testing environment. I have fixed it and now actually see a performance improvement. I have updated the presentation and zipped it and the test code in the attachment below. Hi all - I really hope you can help me on this, because this problem is rather bizarre.
I have a VI that opens fine and runs fine. It's a rather massive VI, with upward of 30 subVIs.
If I open the VI, save it (even without making any changes!), close it, and then repeat that process a few times, on average about the 4th time I try to open it, LabView cannot display it; my CPU usage jumps to 50% (corresponding, I think, to maxing out one of the two CPUs), and Labview becomes unresponsive (and the front panel never shows up, and I can't ctrl-E into the block diagram).
This, of course, makes it rather difficult for me to edit the VI.
It seems like the file is corrupt, or something of the sort, so what I really need is some kind of workaround on making a not-corrupt copy, because re-writing it would be a huge pain.
P.S I'm not sure if posting the VI would do any good, since so much of it is various subVIs. I am also quite certain that there is not anything wrong with the code.
Are you able to open the VI?
If so, select the entire Block Diagram and copy everything into a blank, new VI. See if that helps...
Strange things do happen. In the past, there were bizzare "insane objects" which were resolved by copying the block diagram into a new blan vi. Saving it, and everything was fine afterwards..
Let us know ...LabVIEW 8.5 crashes when I try to open this VI
A few days ago i was making changes to this VI for programmatically fitting the waveform graph to a pane on front panel. I was able to make some changes to the code successfully, saved the file and closed LabVIEW. But today i am not able to open the VI and LabVIEW crashes without giving any error codes. There is too much work put into this main vi and it will take a long time to reproduce it. Please HELP!!!
Yup, it crashes. I would recommend that you go back to your last backup and work from there... What's that? You don't have a recent backup? Hmmmm.... Consider this a lesson learned... Yet another good reason for source code control - daily backups.Mike...
Crashes for me as well I am afraid, But it is a pretty sad state of affairs that we have become so accustomed to corrupted VIs/projects. When was the last time you came across C code which brought down the IDE when loaded?I have to say, 6.0, 7.0 and 7.1 (the other versions I have worked with), were far less prone to random shutdowns and corrupted code.
Does NI have a way to salvage these corrupt VIs? There were only a few changes made towrds the end of the editing cycle and we should be able to discard those changes and retrieve the rest.
I hope someone says yes :smileysad:
Maybe someone with Labview 8.6 beta can open it....

How can I do to open some old VI (made on LabVIEW 6i) at LabVIEW 8.2?
Have you tried to simply open it? It's possible the VI was saved without a block diagram. In that case you won't be able to convert it.
Any VI written in LabVIEW 6 or later should convert to 8.5 when you open it. There may be some change in the functionality of the code, I would suggest reading through the <a href="http://www.ni.com/pdf/manuals/371780c.pdf" target="_blank">8.5 upgrade manual </a>and going to page 38 where changes in functionality are outlined.
I hope this answers your question.
Sorry about that! It should still convert when you open it however the upgrade manual for 8.2 can be found <a href="http://www.ni.com/pdf/manuals/371780b.pdf" target="_blank">here</a> and the page you are after this time is 30.
...Index Tab in Help does not work, freezes LabView 8.2, 8.5
I have Windows XP MME installed with LabView 8.2. At first the NI HELP did not work. The hourglass pause would show and just vanish without anything returned. No lockup, just remains at the Getting Started Window.. I ran two patches suggested by NI at the windows start>run command. Now the NI Help window opens. But when I try to find something under the SEARCH tab, nothing is found. At that time I try to select the INDEX tab, and after a breif pause, a windows pop box is displayed indicating that an error has occurred and that a report is to be be sent to Microsoft. Then after I let it do its stuff, and close that box, I find that LabVIEW has frozen also and needs to be exited, of cours another Microsoft error box pops up and wants to send another report. I was instructed by a NI rep to uninstall and perform a fresh reinstall. Still the same result. I was able to obtain LV 8.5. I fully removed LV 8.2, and installed LV 8.5. The exact same thing happens. It appears to me a MS system problem, but where and how do I go about to fix this?

I started using SPC toolkit for a project in Labview 8.2.1, had no problem until I upgraded my system to labview 8.5. It said something like: Some subvis are too old to be converted to 8.5.I went to the Labview Developer suite CD album (labview 8.5), and couldn't find the SPC for LabVIEW, only for LabWindows / CVI. Then I went to NI's website and tried to find more about the toolkit, it seems this one had disappeared into thin air, along with the Enterprise connectivity toolkit (or Enterprice toolkit).Does anybody know if NI stopped developing / supporting the SPC toolkit? Or if NI included it into other toolkit or product?Thanks,-Joe
it could be that there are some vis from LV5. So i think if you save the vis which are to old to use with LV8.5 with 8.2.1 then it should work.
It is included with the DSC module in 8.5.

sorry for a silly question, but I tried to locate the LabVIEW DSC Module 8.5 in my Professional development environment and I cannot find it.
Would you please tell me which disk is it on?
It doesn't come with the pro version. As mentioned, it comes with the DSC which is an option for the Developer Suite or you can buy it separately.
I am sorry for confusion, I have full Developer Suite, Professinal Development System, inside 11 CDs.

Hello, For a independent study Labview class I'm taking, I am trying to create a program that will input two different wav files and combine parts of them together for audio output. The first file I am trying to cut out the bass lines and replace them with the bass lines from the second file. Kind of like turning the second file into a karaoke version and filling in the vocals with the vocal line from the first file. A second option is simply taking the instrumentals from a song (a wav file containing only the bass line) and adding them to the first file after cutting out the original bass line of the first if this isn't possible. I found the attached file while searching for information/examples as to how to do this - it was originally posted at:http://forums.ni.com/ni/board/message?board.id=170&message.id=74618&requireLogin=FalseI tried running the file in Labview 8.20 and it came back with the error that "Build Screen.vi not found." ...Why multihreaded soft worked under Labview 7 but is slower under Labview 8.2.1
Hello all !
I have a multithreated software developped under Labview 7.0.
Under this version, multithreading can be enabled/disabled via the options menu / performance & disk section. This is not present under Labview 8.2.1.
My software works properly under LW7 but is slower under LW8.2.1...how can I configure labview and or my vi to make it running as well as under LW7 ???
Is there a "hidden" option to enable/disable multithreading under LW8.2.1 ?
Thank you for your help
To disable multithreading, add ESys.StdNParallel=0 to the ini file.

However, it is not celar that this is the problem. Did you save the entire hierachy under 8.2.1 after conversion (of course after making sutable backup copines of the 7.0 version ;)). Freshly converted, but not yet saved code runs typically much slower.
Also, what do you mean by "slower" 10% slower, 10x slower? How do you measure speed?

Good afternoon everybody,
I've got a big problem with LabView. The fact is that I begin with this software...
I've just installed LabView 8 on a computer where LabView 6 was installed. Once the installation finished, I tried to launch a VI That was developped under the old version.
The problem is that two VI can't be found :

- AI Acquire Waveform.vi
Therefore, I can't use anymore the program that was working before... What is the solution to get everything ok please ?
Thank you very much !

Our testing computer right now just has the user run the corresponding .vi file since we have LabVIEW 7.1 installed on the computer.
If I use 8.5 to compile this .vi to an executable, I realize that I must install the run-time support for 8.5. My question is what effect will installing the 8.5 run-time have on the ability to continue to run the other 7.1 VIs with LabVIEW 7.1.
Should I be concerned with losing MAX settings when installing the run-time support for 8.5? I want to be able to run 8.5 executables but also able to open up a 7.1 .vi file in LabVIEW 7.1 and run it that way also.
Thanks for your help! I have 8.5 on my system and the idea is to slowly replace the running of the .vi files with .exe files, I was just curious in case my .exe doesn't work I can still run the tests with .vi in the mean time.
Thanks for your help folks!
...I need convert LabVIEW 4.0 files to LabVIEW 8.5. Can it be done?
I am running LV8.5. I am upgrading and/or converting an old legacy system. All I have is the disk with the VIs from the old system. I do not have an older version of LV installed.
I can install all the way back to version 5.1. But I am concerned, can LV8.5 convert 5.1? The real question is what is the earliest version of LV that 8.5 will convert and will that version convert 4.0.1?
I have to imagine this has been done. With all the legacy systems going obsolete. This should be a common need.
Thanks for all of the responses. I have about 500+ VIs to convert. I would not be able to post them because of the nature of the projet but thanks for the suggestion. I have to imagine that someone in the office has 8.2 still floating around. I do not want to go back to 6 or 7. I will hunt for an older machine in the AM. Maybe a good job for an intern.
