mumps.gld files from GT.M 5.3 32 bit not upgradeable using GTM 5.4-001 64bit
Just a note that mumps.gld files used by GT.M 5.3 32bit won't load into GT.M 5.4-001 64bit to upgrade. [KSB] Correct. Like object files, global directory files are binary files that are loaded into process memory. Data structures are different on 32- and 64-bit architectures. why does '\M <space><line return' generates token<M^^M> ?? texbook Exercise 8.6
in Excercise 8.6 of the TEXbook, the end of string is '\M ', the answer says it generates a token <M^^M>, because the line return is ^^M, I wonder why the space after \M does not terminate the reading of the control sequence \M, because the book says on page 46 "if TEX sees an escape character , ......(c) the name consists of all letters beginning with the current one and ending with the first non-letter,... this becomes a control sequence, then TEX goes to state S." so after the ' ' (space), TEX is in S state, and on page 47 the book says " if TEX sees an end-of-line character , .... if TEX is in state S, then the character is dropped", so it seems that the ^^M should be dropped, instead of being put into the control sequence token ??? thanks Yang lilostitch wrote: > in Excercise 8.6 of the TEXbook, > the end of string is '\M ', the answer says > it generates a token <M^^M>, because the line return is ^^M, > I wonder why the space after \M does not terminate the reading of the > control sequence \M, > because the book says on page 46 "if TEX sees an escape character , > ......(c) the name consists of all letters beginning with the current > one and ending with the first non-letter,... this becomes a control > sequence, then TEX goes to state S." > > so after the ' ' (space), TEX is in S state, and on page 47 the book > says " if TEX sees an end-of-line c...

The wonderfulness of the PIPE device in GT.M
Just a thank you to Bhaskar and the GT.M team. The power of the new PIPE device is just becoming apparent to me, and it has already made my life using GT.M easier. My favorite example is with a "trans" program that translates between languages, the PIPE device could be quite interesting. For example with the program: Set filter=3D"machine translation" Open filter:(SHELL=3D/bin/sh:COMMAND=3D"trans -from=3DEN -to=3DRU|trans - from=3DRU -to=3DEN")::PIPE Use filter Write "The spirit is willing but the flesh is weak",! Read s Use $Principal Write s,! You might get as output: The vodka is excellent but the caviar is rotten.
