I think it's very nlikely that Gmail will allow relaying, although you
should be able to send to your own account. Port 465 is for SMPTS (i.e. SSL
wrapped SMTP)

Gmail's SMTP server only allows encrypted connections; it also requires a
username and password. I don't think that mail() function can do such a
job. You should find a different function to send mail. There're some
clases in pear.php.net that may do the trick.

PHP mail() function failing to send mail
Hi everyone, Our setup: PHP 4.3.11, FreeBSD 5.3 RELEASE, Sendmail 8.1, 1 host environment, 2 jails. Our problem: While we can send email from the command line just fine in one of the jails, we cannot use the php mail() command to send email using sendmail at all. The function, when executed, does absolutely nothing. No error, no reports to the maillog, nothing. I've read somewhere that it's "not possible" to send mail using the php mail() function within a freebsd jail, but i'm nearly certain we have it working this way on another server, but can't seem to figure out the issue. Anyone know any tests we can do to learn more? Thanks. Check out the log messages from your sendmail... If it's not logging anything, try increasing (temporarily) the log level (24 should be more than enough) Probability says that you're running into a permission issue with sendmail. Probably your PHP/Apache user is not allowed to relay email. I'm not sure this might apply since I am not familiar to BSD, but, had similar problems with a RH machine just a few days ago ...

Once the message has been passed to your MTA, there is nothing about how it originated. Rather, it is the headers (most of which you supply), content, source domain and ip which determine if its spam or not (by most spam filters, at least). For the sending of individual emails the manual has this to say:
Note: It is worth noting that the mail() function is not suitable for larger volumes of email in a loop. This function opens and closes an SMTP socket for each email, which is not very efficient. For the sending of large amounts of email, see the PEAR::Mail, and PEAR::Mail_Queue packages.
So either use them, or build your own using fsockopen. Then again, hundreds isn't that much relatively...

mail error when using PHP
Howdy! I've encountered an odd error, and it seems to happen only when PHP is used to send email. I'm using PHP 4.1.2 on RH 7.1. The problem is best seen when OS Commerce generates email. Specifically, email that is sent to a local mailbox has the 'F' removed from the "From " header (I think this is the very first character in email messages). With the 'F' missing, the mail file is obviously corrupted. For now, I've resorted to using sed() and lockfile to fix it. When I had a little time some months ago, I spelunked through the OSC code; it seems the problem is within a PHP mail handling function. Has anyone ever seen this? What can I do to fix it? (Or, more politely, where can I look to learn how to fix it?) mail() function doesn't seem to be sending MAIL FROM: properly
I'm trying to send an email using the mail() function. I've carefully made use of the ini_set(SMTP, "mail.my.server") function to set my SMTP server and also to set my From: address. I'm still getting a "Relaying not explicitly allowed: fakeemail@fakedomain.com" response from the server however, when I try and set a recipient who is outside of my own domain. This makes my think that the From: address is somehow not getting sent to my server properly or that I'm pointing at the wrong server. The confounding thing is that it was working for a while and I don't think I changed anything and it just stopped. I'm running these PHP pages for a client off of one of those cheap hosting services, I think it's called 1dollarhost.com or something, although I can't remember at the moment. Has anyone else had trouble with this or found a solution? Many thanks, Todd tzuccolo2001@yahoo.com wrote: > I'm trying to send an email using the mail() function. Not being able to send mails through PHP using SMTP
Hello everyone, I am using Apache 1.3.33 as the web server and PHP version 4.3.10. My machine is using Windows XP 2002 professional edition which comes with a Windows firewall. I am using McAfee free edition for anti-virus. I use an ISP provider from my country and according to them I do not need to perform authentication while sending mails through their SMTP address. Thus I am using external SMTP server. I don't have IIS installed in my computer nor do I have an SMTP server running. I tried the PHP's mail(...) function but the function fails. It reports that the connection to the SMTP host cannot be made. I set the SMTP host using the ini_set function as well as editing the php.ini and specifying the host (then again restarting Apache server). This doesn't help. The mail function still fails with the same error. Disabled the Windows firewall and McAfee anti-virus. But the same problem persists. Thinking that I may have somehow messed up the header information or not properly using CRLF, I used the phpmailer class. The classes have been installed properly. The phpmailer's send(..) function also fails with the error: Debug Warning: C:\Program Files\Pcounter Web Report\www\libraries\class.smtp.php line 177 - fsockopen(): unable to connect to smtp.wlink.com.np:25 I am using the default port that is 25. On unix, mail() is nothing more than a wrapper to a local sendmail program, on win32 it's a wrapper that communicates to a smtp daemon. So either you can do yourself (exec()/sockets) or use on of the classes to be found on the usual sites (phpclasses/hostscritps)... mail::sendmail (SOMETIMES) get "bad file descriptor" error when mail not local
I have a leased Linux box that I installed mail::Sendmail on using CPAN I'm using a perl script to send mail. I have a domain on that server and I get my personel email at that address. The script works fine when I am using my own email address as the recipient, but when I try to send to any other domain I get, for example, "sendmail failure sending to somebody@otherdomain.org Bad file descriptor" I don't have this problem with by Linux box at home and I thought I configured it the same way. (I just let CPAN do it's thing) I noticed that there is a soft link to qmail on the remote server, but it was my understanding that mail::Sendmail is independant of other mail programs. Is there some configuration file I can change to solve this problem? Anyone have any ideas?
