PLEASE HELP ME ($20 REWARD!!) PHP(v5.0.4)/MySQL(v4.1.14) Problem. Need Basic Drop-down menu populated by 1 column from MySql

Hi everyone,

I've been trying very hard to make a drop-down menu work, but it is
very frustrating. I have looked at several examples here and other
places online, and tried altering them to suit my page, but no luck.

I would appreciate it if some kind person would help me do this
(This is for a fundraiser for the local Rotary club.)

-- Here is my situation:
I have a database called rotary_pizza_db and a table called greeks
The table greeks contains the column called house
I simply want a page with ONE drop down menu that takes the house names
from the mysql database and uses them to populate a drop-down menu with
choices, and sends the variable as house (if possible)

The only other thing is a password blank.

I WILL PAY THE FIRST PERSON THAT HELPS ME by posting a solution here
$20 via paypal if they write out the whole thing, line for line, with
comments in between lines to explain what each line is doing.
No kidding. I'm really that stuck. I will pay right away once I test
that it works.
I am using PHP 5.0.4 and MySQL 4.1.14.
PLEASE EMAIL ME FIRST so I can say 'go ahead' and don't have 2 people
doing it at the same time. My email is snowsong1@gmail.com.
NEED THIS ASAP.

I have been able to get the login/pw to work with blanks, but I really
want the pulldown menu as there is quite a long list of houses
involved.

Please please please help!!

Thanks in advance,

Jamie

// Connecting to the database server
$link = mysql_connect('host', 'user', 'password')
   or die('Could not connect: ' . mysql_error());

// Selecting database
mysql_select_db('rotary_pizza_db')
  or die('Could not select database');

// Performing SQL query
$result = mysql_query('SELECT house FROM greeks')
  or die('Query failed: ' . mysql_error());

// Printing results in HTML
echo "<form action='#'>\r\n<select name=house>\r\n";

  $house = $line[0];
  echo "  <option value=$house>$house\r\n";

echo "</select>\r\n <input type=submit value=Send>\r\n</form>\r\n";

That's it, really...

Thank you very much for the help, NC.
It has helped me a long quite a bit, as I now see the house names
populating the drop-down list.

The only problem i have is that I need a password blank below it to
submit passwords, and everything I have tried to combine my previous pw
blank with this drop down list doesn't work.
Sorry, I'm a php novice in way over my head.
Could you please tell me how to add a pw blank? I have attached my
code below if it helps, with what you helped me do inserted.

Thank you very much,

Sincerely,

Jamie

Everything should be enclosed in one form tag. Edit the one in the top
line of the quoted section and remove the bottom one.

The dropdown box must be within the range of the form to be included. In
other words, the drop down box needs to be created between the <form ...>
.... </form> tags to take effect. Try changing the order in your code to
this:

<!-- first start the form -->

<! THIS STUFF IS WHAT I USED BEFORE. I was able to log in by typing
user names and passwords manually -->
<! Now I would like to be able to combine the password blank below
(drop the House Name blank, of course) -->
<form action="gk_login.php" method="post">

<!-- now put in the drop down -->

<?php
// Create the form.
require_once ('./lcr_folder/mysql_connect.php');

// Performing SQL query
$result = mysql_query('SELECT house FROM greeks')
  or die('Query failed: ' . mysql_error());

// Printing results in HTML
// REMOVE the extra <form> from here!!! You only need one
echo "\r\n<select name=house>\r\n";
while ($line = mysql_fetch_array($result, MYSQL_NUM)) {
  $house = $line[0];
  echo "<option value=$house>$house\r\n";
}
echo "</select>\r\n <input type=submit value=Send>\r\n\r\n";
// Also REMOVE the extra </form> from here
?>

<!-- And then the rest of your form fields -->

<p>Greek House Name: <input type="text" name="house" size="20"
maxlength="40" /> </p>
<p>Greek Password: <input type="password" name="greek_password"
size="20" maxlength="20" /></p>
<p><input type="submit" name="submit" value="Login" /></p>
<input type="hidden" name="submitted" value="TRUE" />
</form>

<!-- And that's it! -->

The problem was that you had the drop down box in a different form than the
password field. <form><select...></form><form><password...></form> doesn't
work, they both need to be in the same form in order to be submitted in the
same request. When submit is clicked only those fields which are within it's
<form></form> get submitted

OK, right now you have:

> // Printing results in HTML
> echo "<form action='#' method='post'>\r\n<select name=house>\r\n";
> while ($line = mysql_fetch_array($result, MYSQL_NUM)) {
>   $house = $line[0];
>   echo "<option value=$house>$house\r\n";
> }
> echo "</select>\r\n <input type=submit value=Send>\r\n</form>\r\n";

Replace it with this:

// Printing results in HTML
echo "<form action='gk_login.php' method='post'>\r\n",
     "Greek House Name: <select name=house>\r\n";
while ($line = mysql_fetch_array($result, MYSQL_NUM)) {
  $house = $line[0];
  echo "<option value=$house>$house\r\n";
}
echo "</select><br>\r\nGreek Password: ",
     "<input type='password' name='greek_password'> size=20
maxlength=20\r\n ",
     "<input type='hidden' name='submitted' value='TRUE'>\r\n",
     "<input type='submit' value='Login'>\r\n</form>\r\n";

That should do it...

Cheers,

MySQL 4.1 / PHP 5.0 : Unicode problems
Hi Everyone, I have been trying to build a website that has multilingual support using the LAMP setup. I have created tables that store language information and correlate different strings ids with languages. The strings are all VARCHAR with unicode (utf8) encoding. I have tried all the ways that I could think of and I have checked every website to no avail. What I am trying to do is simply open a connection to the database (using mysqli) and query the tables for one unicode string entry. Then I call fetch_object on the result and print it to an HTML document. This fails with me. The characters I see are not unicode but either ??????? or some weird character. Aparently the encoding turns out to be ISO-8859-1. I have done the following: 1. Create the entries in the MySQL tables as unicode in InnoDB tables. Unicode text shows up properly in phpmyadmin. 2. Query correctly to the best of my knowledge using mysqli. 3. Add the proper header encoding to the http header and add this meta tag to the html: <meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=UTF-8"/> Everything I have read says that this should work even though PHP is notorious for unicode support. What I have been able to narrow down the problem to is that the string that I get back from the database is latin encoding. I know it is unicode from MySQL (phpmyadmin), so I assume the problem lies in the mysqli_query function call or with the fetch_object call. Please help, I have been...

php 4.4 not working with mysql 4.1
I recently installed php 4.4.4 using windows binaries on Windows XP Pro. I also installed MySQL 4.1. I usually use Pear DB but I tried MDB2 and it worked fine until a client uses a different version so I reverted back to straigh PHP mysql function calls. I use this code: $link = mysql_connect('localhost', 'username', 'password'); if (!$link) { die('Could not connect: ' . mysql_error()); } echo 'Connected successfully'; And get this error: Warning: mysql_connect() [function.mysql-connect]: Client does not support authentication protocol requested by server; consider upgrading MySQL client in D:\MyDocuments\web\client\login.php on line 3 Line 3 = $link = mysql_connect('localhost', 'username', 'password'); This is from the PHP.ini file: ;Windows Extensions ;Note that MySQL and ODBC support is now built in, so no dll is needed for it. Therefore I assumed I didn't have to do anything to get access especially since MDB2 worked. Any ideas of what to do? mysql 5.0.22, php 5.1.4, and phpmyadmin on Apache2 on Windows XP Home
I installed Apache 2.0.58, tested it, got the "working" page. Installed MySQL 5.0.22, and didn't really see how to test that, but there is a mysql process running in the task manager. Ran through the PHP 5.1.4 installation directions, and that seems to work, since I can use phpinfo() and get all the information on a test php page. Then I installed (really just unzipped and placed some files according to the directions) PHPMyAdmin; did the configuration, ran through their setup script, and that all seemed to go OK. However, when attempting to open the index.php in the PHPMyAdmin folder, it says it couldn't open the mysqli connection (also tried setting it to mysql in the config, but same message). I then searched the groups and saw the big uproar that php 5 as a windows installer package did not include mysql support the way previous versions did. Some posts said the only option was to compile it myself w/ mysql support, or wait for a dll to be made. However, all these posts were from 2003 - 2005. I also searched online documentation at php.net, but could find no successful searches for adding mysql support to php 5. Can anyone tell me if there's a way to get phpmyadmin and mysql working on this Windows XP Home machine running Apache2? Do I need to downgrade versions of something, or can I somehow add some lines to my PHP files and put a dll somewhere? Secondary question: I notice that I have a php.ini file in the Windows dire...

Comments in SELECT via PHP/ODBC DB2 UDB v8.1.9 Linux, PHP 4.4.0
Several weeks ago I asked what comments I could pass to DB2 in a SELECT statement. I don't remember whether I said via PHP/ODBC. I was assured that both /* */ style comment blocks and -- comment lines were allowed. Unfortunately, neither work. Both -- and /* */ comments cause a "premature end of statement". Any sage advice? using mysql 4.1 with php 5
I'm trying to enable mysql 4.1 support in php 5 under xp pro and iis. I have uncommented the line: extension=php_mysql.dll in php.ini. Now I get the message: "unable to load the dynamic library: ./php_mysql.dll - The specified module could not be found." I don't see php_mysql.dll in c:\php. Does php_mysql.dll come with php5? What can I do to fix this problem? Help please with PHP/MySQL Install Problem
I'm trying to setup PHP5 on a test server at work. I removed PHP 4 and setup PHP5 as a clean install. I did the manual install per the instructions. The machine run Windows Server 2003 with IIS 6.0. I have 2 annoying issues: No matter what I do, when I look at phpinfo() it reports that it is reading the php.ini file from c:\windows. Even though I have made all the ini file adjustments, put in the registry change, etc. it still won't read the php.ini from c:\php. Even more problematic, though, is I cannot get MySQL integration to work. I went through dozens of posts on the main PHP website and did all of the troubleshooting elements. C:\php and C:\php\ext are both in my path. Other extensions from C:\php\ext load up fine, but when I "activate" (i.e. uncomment the extension line) for MySQL, PHP no longer loads up pages (even one that does no database interaction). When I look at the production screen I get an error message that basically says (sorry, left the exact wording on a sheet at work), "Unable to process file c:\php\ext\php_mysql.dll" The file is in the directory noted above. I though the file might have gotten corrupted, so I copied over a fresh version. Same problem. At this point I'm going crazy. Can anyone suggest a solution? Please give me a direction - am I totally lost in my own world and have spent 6 months in vain trying to figure this out, or is there a fruit of truth hidden somewhere? Excuse me for rapid end of some sentences and chaotic appearance of equations- i am just tired. I have spent 1 month practically thinking only about 1 thing. I need some rest and support. On other hand, this chaotically ordered text is good as it will cause confusion and will stretch imagination:) Approximately 50% of the following text is obviously right > 37,5%-is subjective <12,5%- optional Approximately 50% of peop...

PHP 5.1.2 and using PHP w Apache2 and MySQL
Hello all, First of all I first dld and installed (unzipped) PHP 5.1.1 before 5.1.2 was released, so do I just unzip 5.1.2 over the existing 5.1.1 and use the same php.ini file, or is there more to it than that? When I run phpinfo it still displays the ver as 5.1.1, is this ok? Also, I have installed Apache 2.0.55 and PHP 5.1.2 (see above 5.1.2 question) on my personal windows me computer, and I would like to install MySQL as well. To the best of my knowledge both of the above SEEM to be working and setup correctly. My goal in doing this is so that I can learn to use Apache, PHP and MySQL on my computer. When I am somewhat proficient I still want to continue to develop and test web pages without first having to upload everything to the server, where everything will then be available to the rest of the unsuspecting world. I would like to keep any requests via the internet from being accepted by my system if at all possible. Can I accomplish this or is this just a hopeless dream? Which community ver number of MySQL is best for what I am trying to do? Am I using the proper vers of Apache and PHP? A couple of years ago I did this with all windows progs. I used PWS and Access from ms. I wrote ASP scripts to read and write to the Access database and everything that I wanted to do. However, the ms solution is getting too expensive. If and when I have this working the way I want, I will probably change to a Linux os. But, it will not be for a while...
